Time for one of the Grand Prixs personifying all that is wrong with the vision of F1 as FIA and Liberty have, we will be sold how it is a fantastic arrangement, how the US is embracing F1 and the number of people through the gates repeated at all the various coverages.
I will naturally watch all I can possibly squeeze in, while lamenting how a race like this is supposed to make us happy.

What a great weekend opening thread...
Miami gave me, at least, the best improvised motorsport-related joke ever, made my Joylon Palmer. He does a rerun here https://youtu.be/CQ8...pJ521-vgxXAMHQL
But he made the joke, live during the Grand Prix as well, in about the three seconds he had there.
All hail Vectron! I mean: Joylon!

Totally forgot this one was on this weekend! What a nice surprise. In all seriousness I think there are too many Grands Prix for me to give my full attention to each one.
What's the marina looking like this year?

I really don’t mind this circuit at all. I’d dare say I even like it a bit.
Yeah, I like the track. Interestingly it produces a very high number of overtakes. 50+ in both 2022 and 2024, and that's despite it being a very easy 1 stop.
Softer tyres this year and a chance of rain on Sunday. I'll take that.

Miami is just one of those new tracks that merges as a blob with other recent additions like Saudi. Races that are quickly forgotten, and don't seem like they mean much. At least it isn't another nonsensical night race- a gimmick that is ridiculously overused by F1.

Sprint weekend, rain, new updates for the RedBull, new baby, US race related cringe, absolute cinema.
Posted Today, 09:38
How many overtakes were done without DRS is the important question.

That's the opening post the the Thread Opener should have started with (and May the 4th), he failed miserably.

I don't really understand what this means or why it's important, because DRS is only used on the straights and not in the corners. At virtually every track on the grid, overtakes happen in braking zones.

The chance of rain gives hope this has the potential to be fun. And the competitive order will probably swing again.
At least cars can race here a bit, even if everything else is horrid.
Oh it's a sprint too isn't it. I'll ignore that bit as I'm actually away again - does anybody know of any good places in Stuttgart that might show the race on Sunday?
Posted Today, 10:10
I think it said a lot that the little build up on Sky at the end of the last race seemed to be all about Miami the place rather than Miami the race.
Posted Today, 10:12
Miami the place, where the circuit is notably not located.

When it rains in Miami you can bet your yacht that it will be a Torrential dump from the heavens and the red will fly. The cars will be straight back to the garages.
Jp
True, but still a chance of mixing things up if its mid-race.

Just because it reminds me of how CART called its Brands Hatch race in the early 2000s the "London Champ Car Trophy", I found it interesting that Miami Gardens is around the same distance, to a mile or two, from central Miami as Brands Hatch is from Charing Cross, the canonical centre of London.*Nigel Tufnel voice*

The GP 2023 was memorable for Verstappen standing up that season. 2024, McLaren suddenly showed up with a fantastic car. Plenty of stories to tell about a track that's new on the calendar! I'm not a fan of the "Miami vibe", but it is a stage that is completely different from all the others tracks'. And dare I say it: It's great track on the PlayStation.
I'm very much looking forward to the weekend, especially since I can't wait to see whether RBR have brought decent upgrades. Also, rain would be quite spectacular.
Just don't like the starting times.

Oh man. In the Netherlands trying to brand anything with the 'Amsterdam' has gone up to hysterical heights. The Muiden Castle is now called 'The Amsterdam Castle' in marketing-lingo. And it's 20 k's (13 miles) from Amsterdam, in another municipality altogether!

Looking forward to this, in the UK it will be on the telly during the evening which makes it perfect!

The San Francisco 49ers, play in San Jose, the stadium is 70 km from San Francisco.

I know it’s less wacky (but obviously sadly timely due to this week’s anniversaries) but Imola is nearly 100 kms from San Marino.

Indeed. I honestly couldn't tell you if the first corner is a left or right-hander. The only bit I remember is the part where they go under the underpass.
Another forgettable event that blends in with loads of others.

Is the fake marina still there?
That is the one thing I genuinely like about the track (or rather - and I’m not proud of this) the one thing I can remember about it.

I genuinely find that latter sentiment a bit odd because it’s a pretty unique setting. It’s not like the various night races we have now. You can actually tell at a glance this is the Miami track.
Can you really tell the difference between one concrete corridor and another. On the long shots there is a stadium but then it's just a relentlessly flat sea of nondescript housing.
The sky can look pretty though.

Not to me, sorry. It looks like the Valencia street track did, or many of the other current street tracks when they are run in the daylight.
Beyond that though, all the corners just look the same as plenty of others.

If it pours with rain it might not be fake any more.

Are teams instructed to bring special liveries here, or something? I don't get what the significance of them is.
This event isn't brand new anymore, and yet it's not been around long enough to establish itself as anything particularly special, either - or more special than any other race, to the point that it warrants a different livery.
As ever, it's all a bit over the top and unnecessary.

The Racing Bulls wheel covers are the best bit: painted like the top of a Red Bull can.

I believe the race is a big deal for American corporate types.
I thought there was a rule against having lots of special liveries, VCARB ran a one off in Japan and now they have another one.
Just like every driver having a special helmet every other race it gets a bit tedious.

Which other tracks look like this and have their races during the day? Go on…
I mean, we all learned how to tell the difference between the various grass corridors too, but somehow this is different?

The Valencia circuit had some blue walls and a bit of blue tarmac on the edges of the road.Valencia isn’t part of the calendar, but anyway, it had quite a different colour palette. Much yellower than Miami, which is bluer.
