Money aside, would anyone here honestly put Doohan in their top 50 best drivers currently available for an F1 seat?
I think he is easily top50.
I have my doubts about top20, or even top25 though.

You would be hard pressed to find a bigger Roberto Moreno fan than me but I would argue that "Briatore is a menace and a chancer, he even broke a contract in order to sign the rookie Michael Schumacher" is not a terribly strong argument against him, or for that matter dumping Jack Doohan. The colourful personality and convicted F1 cheat at the centre of messy Jack Doohan split
I loved this article.[bolded by me]
I guess someone isn't having, or afraid of losing, credentials!

Kym Illman: ''Doohan was recieving threats on social media by Colapinto's fans. So much so that he had a round-the-clock security in Miami. According to people close to Aussie, those threats weighed heavily on him. People had discovered his personal e-mail address and were sending e-mail threats which resulted in Jack, his girlfriend and even his father holding real concerns for their safety. And on top of that, Jack's sleep was affected.''

Gotta say this behavior sounds pretty familiar.

That's gonna be fun if Colapinto gets no more than these 5 races

This swap seems like it has been planned for weeks as the Colapinto MercardoLibre advert which appeared online today was clearly not the work of a few hours.

That's just a nice way of putting it by Alpine. Fact is they never wanted Doohan from the get-go, abit like how Red Bull didn't want Tsunoda until situations forced their hands.
He will never be reconsidered if he's sacked, that's for sure. Reassess my ass
the rumour for the number of races was known. I did not know but started going back and reading.
It aligns. So it is predetermined.
So they replace Doohan because he crashed a lot with Colapinto who crashed a lot at Williams?
Just because a try out period existed does not mean it was pre determined to sack him after the try out period.
“Having reviewed the opening races of the season, we have come to the decision to put Franco in the car alongside Pierre for the next five races,” said executive advisor Flavio Briatore
Using your logic, it's already predetermined that Colapinto will get replaced after 5 races.

Yeah sure... and they didn't say anything about it until now. How convenient...

The Colapinto advert is very clever.

Seems to check out with what we already knew about a section of current Argentinian motorsport fans.

Given the results and racecraft of Doohan so far I can't be suprised. Colapinto on the other hand did great in his first few races last year but then started crashing like a madman as well coming third int he crash cup (https://www.reddit.c...inale/#lightbox)) with just 9 races.

Just to be explicit because some people don't follow US motorsports, Callum Ilott received similar treatment when he was teammates with Agustin Canapino at the Juncos Indycar team.

Nothing new, sadly. Damon Hill was given a police escort at the German GP one year, after there were credible death threats from (presumably) Schumacher idiots fans.
Just ignore them, they are ball-less little cretins.

Seems like they prepared that for awhile now.
Doohan never stood a chance, quite sure they won't replace Colapinto after 5 races no matter what. He just brings too much money to the table

Depends how much of it goes straight back out on crash repairs.

So it's said (on the Sky/BBC podcasts among others) that during the TPC testing Paul Aaron actually surprised with his speed and Colapinto crashed (or at least had off's) both in Qatar and Monza.
But it seems we might get Perez in for the second half of the season....

Yup…. Perez linked with the last half of the season if Colapinto continues his habit of smashing the cars up
How many drivers can they run in total across the season?
I think you can use more drivers than power units in a season.

F1 Sporting Reg 32.1:
"During a Championship each Competitor will be permitted to use a maximum of four (4) drivers in races."
