it appears the deadline was already set in stone before the season started.

So nothing to do with his driving.

What makes you think the deadline was set in stone before the season started, and not created after he sucked for 7 races?

This team should just fold.   Ametuers.

Why did they even hire him in the first place? They’ve been bad-mouthing him ever since his signing was announced.

As for his performance this year, I think he has been very respectable for a rookie. Certainly better than Lawson.

It was extensively reported before the season that he was in for a short time and would almost certainly be replaced with Colapinto mid season.

The exact date for this maybe not, but Flavio made it clear to all, its been an open secret. Sure if he had been amazing they might have changed their minds.

Dirty Flav in february:

Asked if Doohan’s season will be limited to the first five races, he replied: “No, no. It will be more than five…I’m joking.... We will see. First, let’s start the season."

he added: “We fought to have Franco in the team and he is one of the most important assets for us."

Sounds like he was given a chance to shine and failed.  The narrative his performances did not matter, is just rubbish.

Gasly himself and Albon sucked at Red Bull, but even they were given more than 7 races. F1 is getting a bit silly with these rapid firings. Doohan out-qualified Gasly for the first time in Miami, but now he'll be replaced by another driver who will likely also be losing to Gasly for the first races at least.

Alpine should have itself replaced.

I must say I honestly hope Colapinto goes and continues like he ended his Williams stint with: overdriving and racking up a big crash bill.

Shame for him, but really would cheer a crash every race weekend.

Maybe Marko can replace Lawson with Doohan. Liam has been really useless.

That is literally what you did by pretending his performances did not matter, after he was sacked after a string of crappy performances. Do you think he would have been sacked if he had outperformed Gasly?

Very different circumstances and times back at Redbull. Now they are not wasting time either. Teams are no longer wasting time with dead end drivers and I can't blame them. Doohan was crashing a lot without being that fast. You can't afford to do that in such a competitive environment.

Flavio's rookie fail factory. Cram them in, then shunt them out before they're ready.

You get the feeling that Doohan was just used to plug the Ocon gap this year, he was just ‘there’ and ready with Alpine, rather than them struggling around to get a driver on a 1 year contract. I don’t think they ever really wanted him in the seat…the short deadline that was mooted at the start of the year was clearly a ‘you’re getting a chance and being replaced if you don’t look great straight away’.

And take whatever sponsorship money they brought în. Coupled with some personal comissions/fees as a driver manager for Flavio. Then move over to the next guy to fleece.
Meh, I was pretty vocal about Abiteboul and his perceived clown show. Turns out, în retrospect, he wasn't really all that bad, if this îs the team what he had to work with.

"Doohan was sacked for his crashes" seems like obvious bullshit, since he's being replaced at the exact same time it had been rumoured he'd be replaced, before he'd done a single lap this season. This was pre-determined before any crash happened.

The crash at Miami was nothing out of the ordinary neither, minor T1 tangling that could've happened to any driver in the midfield and wasn't particularly anyone's fault, just too many cars ending up at the same place in a tight corner. The only really damning one for Doohan was at Suzuka. He was even performing better than expected, and was starting to give Gasly a real fight in qualifying.

This change is obviously 90% because of Colapinto's money.

Not a good time to be a rookie in F1…

Yeah, it is going really badly for all of them.  Well, not for Andrea AKA....oh, nor for Issac...or Bortoleto.  So it's just the duds that are suffering and even one of them (Lawson) is likely to get the whole year wasting a race seat.

Not a good time to be a rookie in F1…

Antonelli doing great
Hadjar doing great
Berman doing great
Bortoleto doing great
Lawson fluking and demoted rightfully already
Doohan fluking and head on the chopboard

I'd say the rookies are doing very well. Exceptions are always there.
