Haas said in a statement on Sunday morning: "After discussions last night with the FIA, we have subsequently asked for further written clarification on the decision-making concerning Ollie Bearman's final Q1 lap, in order for us to review more comprehensively.

"We similarly asked what measures the FIA/race control can put in place moving forward to ensure that this situation is avoided in the future to the benefit of F1. Upon review we will be more informed to comment.”

I believe that precedent was set with Arvin in F2. He got pole lap deleted because it was red, Dino and Montoya slightly before it and kept theirs. Bearman didn't see it, but if it was a red flag, I guess it was the rules, even if Ollie didn't see it. Tricky subject and I hope for better clarification in the future.

Ollie didn't see it because it was impossible to see given the panels were unlit.

Yes, it's understandable that a flag will take some seconds to be waved after giving the order, but a light panel should be near instant, likewise the timing should register it and not count the lap.

Something doesn't add up.

If the red flag was shown at any other part of the track or communicated to the teams or drivers in any other way, then it's natural that the time would be deleted even if Bearman couldn't see it.

However, if he had crossed the line before the red flag got communicated to anyone in any way, then it feels wrong that the time has been deleted.

That’s Bearman’s argument too. That the tv pictures were plain in showing him crossing the line before the red flag was displayed and that it was also not shown on his dash before he crossed the line. Be interesting to know where (if anywhere) it WAS communicated before he completed his lap.

Live timing and tv feed all showing that red flag (lights) came on after he had crossed the line. FIA has come out with a statement that red flag came down before he crossed the line. I think the FIA made a mistake but they don’t want to admit it so are faking it now.

The thing is, they delayed the start of Q2 to deal with it and still seemed to get it wrong.

Incompetent rotten organisation.

I said on the other thread that the FIA would lie about it.

I would have assumed that "Race Control" had means to time stamp and notify the teams via Live Timing and Scoring of the session status (i.e. Green, FCY, VSC, SC and Red).

Obviously it would take some time to convey the "change in status" to the flagging stations and a bit of time to activate the light panels and in-car indication but the Live Timing and Scoring should have the "record data".

For a sport that measures times within a thousandth of a second you'd think this wouldn't be an issue.

But with the argument FIA have given. They did the red flag at 17.6 seconds over 16:32. (So, at 16:32:17.6 local time)
They then say "Bearman crossed the line at 20.9 seconds over 16:32". So Bearman crossed the line 3.3 seconds after FIA set the Red Flag.
The FIA also states that when Bearman crossed the line it was "with the abort signal/ red flag showing at the start gantry". Which is something we know from footage is wrong.
It takes between 2 and 3 seconds after Bearman cross the line before the red light shows at the start gantry. So let's give FIA the best possible timing on that, and 2sec flat.

That means it takes over 5 seconds, 5.3 seconds, from "Red Flag" to it actually showing. That is a long time.

That also means that Dino Beganovic, who got a red light somewhere between 3 and 4 seconds after setting his time in the F2 qual. Should've lost that time and thus his pole position.
Because, the time from setting the red flag to when it shows cannot possibly be random??
