Hi there,

I've just upgrade my PC...at last!!! :) And I've borrowed F1 Racing Championship from a friend. This is the lastest F1 game released by Ubisoft from the guys who've done F1 Racing Simulator and Monaco GP (F1RS2).

Didn't have much time to play more than 15 minutes but...WOW!

The games looks really really great! Graphically, it buries GP3 and all the rest without any problem. I've tried Spa and well, the track gaphics are just beautiful and SO realistic. They claimed to have used a GPS system to do the track. Oh and you've a range view up to 1.5km!

Concerning the handling, it seems to be okay, more difficult than GP3 but, hey, this is formula 1. The previous F1RS were quite difficult as they were more a simulation than an arcade game.

The only down is the engine sound which is really deceiving.

Anyone played it? Anyone has an opinion as I'm going to buy (yes, I do buy games, well, when they worth it) one of the two: GP3 or F1RC???

i havent played F1R yet, but i own gp3 and as of late i have being playing it heaps, i really like the game. the graphics arnt bad, i usually just do hotlaps now to see how fast i can really go.

i thing i find with most new 'f1' games these days, the graphics are awesome but the gameplay is upto ****. gp3 is realitic as in times etc, thats why i enjoy it. i try to get the same times as the real guys but its not going to happen .. yet, no steering wheel .. maybe i will get on soon.

only thing putting me off is the fact gt3 is coming out, and i might buy one just for that game .. wait and see

Daz,

I tend to agree with you. Never played much at GP3 as my previous PC (a K6 233MHz) was to slow to handle it.

But I've spent hours at GP2 and afterwards when F1RS and F1RS2 came, they clearly buried it in the graphic department: astonishing, fast,....But found the gameplay lacking of something: fun. Well the car were really hard to drive maybe too much "realistic". That's what is so great with GP series: you can find a compromise between fun & realism.

I really hope that F1RC corrected that. I can't tell it right now after only 10 minutes of play. But as I say, I really hope so because, graphically: it is UNCREDIBLE!!!!

And I didn't try it under rain too...Has a lot of options, car parameters, telemetry...

But so you tell me that GP3 is "safe value"?

I might buy it after all, especially that it is cheaper than F1RC, 2/3 the price.

Schumic

I take it you have not done many races with the computer cars yet.

Go and have a proper race and tell me if you do more than 10 laps keeping your front or rear wing.

Linus,

Actually I didn't have time yet to try to do a long distance race. I've just assemble my PC sunday afternoon (before the GP) and just had time to install F1RC and try it for a few minutes.

Yesterday evening, I got back my MS Wheel and finished to install all drivers, soft, Office & stuff.

I may try it further tonight but should I understand that the IA is...er...perfectible???

I'm gonna buy GP3 anyway because it is "sure value"...

SchuMic,

gp3 is cool, people say its ****, but i like it. it takes a while to get used to, as in how the cars are when you try to overtake them etc.

i actually bought the game, and compared to most out there its class. people compare it to gpl, cant really ... too different games

I have GP3 but have not played F1RC yet, I will get if/when they fix the AI problems.

It depends what your after i think. If you played and enjoyed GP2, you will enjoy GP3. If you are interested in just doing hot laps, you may just enjoy F1RC, but if you are like me and like doing full championship seasons, there is only one option and that is GP3. You can just turn it on and race, and dont have to worry about bugs with the AI or anything.

You can completely immerse yourself in the racing with GP3.

Mat

I heard that F1RC2 is already scheduled to be released later on this year. So, I would definitely hold off on buying F1RC.

Thanks all,

Well I'm for to buy GP3...I had tons of great times with GP2 and what I want is exactly what Mat said: do full season and not just hot laps. Don't care if it took time to get used...In contrary, I like it. It is alwys more rewarding when you invest some times and give you more entertainment.

But I'll keep a copy of F1RC while waiting for a patch.

Too bad they missed the AI...:(

Go for GP3. IMHO, it is the best simulation of an F1 car. I have tried EA's F1 Championship 2000 and some others as well but i still find myself playing GP3 most of the time. GP3 sucks in the graphics department but at least the modelling of the car's handling characteristics are more faithful. I remember reading Jenson Button's description on how he attacked Eau Rouge, i swear you can actually experience his feelings when playing on GP3. One last note... Get a steering wheel for the game.. It beats joysticks, keyboards, mice etc .. by a L-O-N-G shot. I am using the Guillemot Ferrari force feedback wheel and the feeling is incredible.

thing i like about gp3 though is, you have to struggle for your times, if you want to be .5 a second quicker you have to work for it

example, im just playing on brazil now, just doing some hotlaps .. setup is bad, best time is 1:18:002 ... how bad do i want 1:17s, and i still cant get it ... more modifications one feels

Triton,

Steering wheel??? Well I've a MS FF wheel for almost 3 years now...:)

It was one of the first things I bought with my first salary!!! :)

I pay more attention to the gameplay & handling than on the graphic (but why complain if they're good).

Daz,

I think I ssee exactly what you mean. With a F1 passionnate, friend of mine, we spent hours at GP2 praticing just to set up the car for a specific track...The most satisfying thing is when your time gets better and better.

But as you say, it needs lot of work but...that's like it in F1 after all? we're talking about simulation not arcade game for kids ;)

GP3 are for purist while the rest are just nice to look at but
nothing to shout about ;)

What makes GP3 so endearing are the many 3rd party add-ons available freely on the Internet.
As it has shown, games like Counter-Strike is so popular becos
of the many free add-ons.

Now i am eagerly awaiting the release of the GP3 upgrade :)
