A post from David Hobbs’ Twitter feed. Hotel de France Le Mans ‘Number 10, the car that Paul Hawkins and I drove in 1968. We had a vibration in practice. The team discovered the exhaust pipes touching chassis. We tested on public roads at 150mph. Decided problem solved. No engine change!! Kablammo!! Not solved!!’ I wonder who is driving Ferrari #11

This is really quite a picture, isn't it?! A side street in the town, the miniature car in the foreground, the guy working at the front of the GT40 (in his suit!), Wyer on the left and who are the three at the back looking up?

The man talking to John Wyer (the one with the glasses) looks like John Horsman.

Being the JW Automotive team, I think this may be taken at the Hotel de France at La Chartre Sur le Loir rather than in Le Mans itself.
Possibly taken in the little alley with the gate to the eastern side of the hotel off Rue de Syke.
Using streetview at that point & facing south the buildings in the background seem to match those in the photo.

Sorry to rain on this particular parade, but as my friend Simon Thomas from Comber, on the Ulster Ards circuit, has pointed out, that Ford GT in the alleyway there is the 1964 Le Mans number 10, the Phil Hill/Bruce McLaren car...nothing to do with the Hobbs/Hawkins Gulf-JW entry made several years later. The race numbers are applied direct on the white-painted doors, the three dark centreline stripes are visible on the roof...and there's a wire-spoked wheel lying in the left foreground. Gulf-JW GT40s were not renowned for running wire wheels...
I believe that's team driver Richie Ginther sitting on the kiddy car right foreground - while Bruce McLaren is in the dark shirt, glancing upwards, at the tail of the car.

ABSOLUTELY no need to apologise. It's a great pic regardless - and mistakes are so easy to make.
Trust me, I have the tee-shirt...

For those with an interest in Paul Hawkins, Lotus enthusiast / historian Marc Schagen was entrusted to scan the Paul Hawkins scrapbook in recent weeks.
The results of this will be displayed over time on Bob Williamson's Old Motor Racing Photographs - Australia FB group.

Brilliant! At that Targa Hawkeye came out with a remark which has since been seared into my memory. During practice, when a team-mate confided that he wasn't comfortable hurtling around the Piccolo Madonie circuit since in so many dodgy corners "I might have to choose between hitting people, a tree or a wall" - Paul growled in his gravelly Orstrylian "Nah mate - no problem. I'd choose people every time. People are mushy".
Not overly woke, then?

A couple of weeks ago when Marc was telling me he was scanning the Hawkins scrapbook, I mentioned Ray English ran some Hawkins related pieces in his 'Marque One' aka Mk1 Sprite magazine. Marc responding that there's Marque One items in the scrapbook. So I was able to tell him about Ray, who knocked around with my uncles and dad with their sports cars up in The Dandenongs of the late 50s and 60s.
What follows is borrowed from Marque One issue 79 (1st Qrt 2012) a nice tribute to Owen Holmes, friend of Paul Hawkins and the author of the tribute, Tony Bennetto (sadly no longer with us, drowning in October 2017).

In Cedric Selzer's 2013/14 'If you have come second you have lost' book he devotes a few pages to anecdotes of experiences with Paul.
The swear jar his wife made, antics at David Piper's batchelor night, low flying in the Lola T70 spyder at St Jovite and the hectic effort to rebuild it for the following week's Bridgehampton.. Etc.
