I know there's much more to a race car than the engine, but with the recent post about engine horsepower and an earlier post listing the team budgets, I thought I'd compare the two and see if there was anything to the comparison:

Team/Engine/Horsepower/Budget/$ Spent per Horsepower
Arrows/Asiatech (Peugot)/770/$73.65m/$95,649
BAR/Honda/795/$195.45m/$249,849
Benetton/Renault/720/$180.95m/$251,319
Ferrari/Ferrari/835/$284.35m/$340,538
Jaguar/Cosworth/825/$177.43m/$215,066
Jordan/Honda/795/$172.90m/$217,484
McLaren/Ilmor Mercedes/825/$274.55m/$332,787
Minardi/European (Cosworth)/770/$47.00m/$61,038
Prost/Acer (Ferrari)/810/$47.50m/$58,641
Sauber/Petronas (Ferrari)/810/$82.65m/$102,037
Williams/BMW/850/$192.95m/$227,000

Do the budgets account for the money spent by the engine suppliers? The Honda, BMW, and Mercedes teams are subsidized by the engine manufacturers. I assume that Jaguar, Ferrari, and Benetton include the engine in their budget. Minardi, Sauber and Prost pay the full cost of their engines too, in that they are not sponsored by Cosworth or Ferrari. If Ferrari was subsidizing Sauber or Prost, they would take advantage of the opportunity to put a Ferrari, Fiat, Alfa, or Maserati badge on the Sauber. I don't know who pays for what proportion of the Asiatech.

Are teams spending all of their budget on the engine alone?

In the July Formula One magazine, there is an article about who pays for engines and who doesn't:

1. Arrows is currently enjoying a free engine deal with Asiatech.
2. BAR and Jordan receive Honda powerplant free.
3. Ferrari, Toyota, Jaguar, and Renault effectively make their own engines.
4. McLaren and Williams receive their free from the manufacturers.
5. Minardi makes do with the 4-year-old Cosworth designs.
6. Sauber and Prost pay $22 million a year plus explicit support of the teams in political and technical negotiations with the FIA for their rebadged Ferrari engines.

I would imagine that the teams that make their own engines or have to pay for the engines include that expense in their budgets. The teams that get the engines free don't reflect the F1 budgets of Asiatech, Honda, Mercedes, and BMW.

A little off the topic, but here's an interesting comparison -- dividing the budget by the number of WCC points. How much as each point cost per team year to date?

Team Budget/WCC Point YTD

Arrows $73.65m

BAR $16.28m

Bennetton $180.95m

Ferrari $2.63m

Jaguar $35.48m

Jordan $11.52m

McLaren $4.90m

Minardi N/A

Prost $15.83m

Sauber $5.16m

Williams $4.48m
