Another really close session at the top. This will definitely be a good season.

But what is with Prost!?!?

Its what was already known, over the two sessions the Ferraris and Macs are pretty even with the next best being 0.5-1.0 sec slower. I don't think any one driver will dominate qualifying this year although i expect Mika to gain most poles but certainly not 11 or 12 like last year.

What can we get out of these two sessions?

Let's see...

Well Woking and Maranello are alot closer to each other than they look on a map...

Swervin' Irvine is seriously outpacing Herbert...

Villenueve is going to do great things with Honda...

Mazzacane for Minardi! Going to give them more points than Gene...

Frentzen fast but needs to be faster...

And Prost...well....I can't say it!

Damn Prost, I am going to have to leave my Pug in the garage till the cloud blows over. Too embarassing to be seen driving a pug this weekend. :(

JayWay,

I'm confused. I thought Blondie was 1.4 seconds behind Schumacher.

The fact that Cubehead is only a hundredth of a second from Schumacher is discouraging. Doesn't that make Hakkinen about .5 seconds clear no matter what?

Well ofcourse, but this isnt CART and the cars arnt all on a somewhat level playing field. JV is in front of the rest for two straight sessions, and also very much ahead of his team mate. I know its early, but you would be anxious as well if Schuey didnt score a point for a whole year.

I expect that qualifying will be extremely close in the top four or five.

MS ran well on and off the track. He was on a hot one when he dumped it into the tire walls. Thank god he's alright. DC looks as if he's ready to make a statement. RB is ready to win. MH is keeping his cards close again.

I am very impressed with Villenueve. He's giving BAR some respect finally after BAT spent all of that money. Watch out for JV in a Honda!

Diniz in sixth is a pleasant surprise. The rich boy can drive!

Wurz toppling Fisi is strange. Maybe Niki gave him some pointers.

Herbert must of had problems. Prost needs to get with Renault before Benneton obviously.

Jayway,

You might enjoy this.

I have a friend who ate dinner with Salo last week, and Salo said that Jville is the quickest driver. JAX!

Cheers

All he needs now is the quickest car! Looks like BAR may actually be onto something this year with Honda!! GO JAX! Man, this makes me so happy, I almost don't need a race this weekend!! Hey, I said ALMOST!

I only meant I "almost" don't need a race! I know it's only practice and I don't want to get over excited but this is so cool to see JV near the top again.

I'm so happy I'm gonna go do the Hampster Dance!! Care to join me anyone??? http://www.hamsterdance.com

Does anyone know what caused Shumis of towards the end of the second session? If the time differences across the field remain it will/could be an interesting top 10 at the end of the season. Are we maybe in for a ripper of year? Yeah I know, to early to tell.

Cautiously optomistic for Jacques, he had two top 5 qualifiers early last year too.

There was actually quite a few drivers spinning off in the second session, Schumacher just did it in grand style, luckily not hurting himself or others. I think the track is still slippery.

Todd, don't get too discouraged. Remember Schumi only got in 15 laps to the McLaren's 25. You have to figure that MS can squeeze at least nother tenth or two out of the car.
That being said, the McLaren's are clearly fast again this year. Not really a surprise.

Nice practice session, I'm so excited the season has finally started!!!

News from corners 15 & 16
The cars don't sound as loud as Montreal
The BAR-Honda, engine/exhaust system sounds a bit rough.
Hakkinen takes a lot more curb on corner 15 than everyone else. Don't hear the 'unique sound' of the Maclaren exhaust :(
Zonta is sliding around all over the place esp. in comparison to Jaxs.
Button is looking fairly smooth for a new driver.
And bloody hell is it great to be here listening to the sounds and seeing it all truly Live :D

Nomad, I guess you will hear a different sound from McLaren tomorrow. The team will use its time trial engine, and that should sound different. MH should go very near to 1.30 (perhaps even under that limit), and DC will be very close to him. It is not impossible, that MS could get the pole, and if this will happen, MS is close to the WDC title. This track does not suit him and Ferrari well, so a pole would be colossal.

DB7 and Mono-posto:
A quote from mr. Alain Prost, from Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, march, 09:
"This is the worst car the team ever made."
(and boy, it shows early)Things will only get better with a new version of Peugeout engine.

Incal, Schumi said himself (see in the Atlas F1 News) that he braked a little too late coming into that corner.

As for Jax, I sincerely hope that the Jordans weren't simply setting up the car for Sunday and that the BAR weren't running on light fuel. But it sure is encouraging. I guess we'll find out "the truth" tonight ... I can't wait anymore! Man is this ever gonna be a long day ... and the Brier is making it two hours longer!!!

The worst part is that I really like Alain Prost and Jean Alesi, but those times are just humiliating!

Schumi said he went too fast and started breaking too late. Stewart said he knew MS was going to crash because the track was too dirty still and Schumi was too enthusiastic. Oh well, Schumi said he is happy anyway, the car had no problems (well, it's pretty messed up now, but he has a spare plus thgey'll fix his own).

Jaxs is flying considering he doesn't have one of the 4 best cars.

What happened to Jos Verstappen beating all the records? wasn't Arrows up to something??? I stated it maybe 10 times before, they may have improved enough to start one or two rows ahead, and mostly thanks to Alain coming out with such a piece of junk.

Mazzacane impressive on his first day. Over half a second faster than Gene, Minardi looks like it's not going to be the Cinderella of F1 any longer. Ah the things you can do with money!!!!!

TBone; too bad you don't live here in Quebec. Yes TSN is tape-delaying qualifying by 2 hrs but RDS (French sister-station) ISN'T!! We get it LIVE, en fancais of course, but at this point I'd watch it in Chinese if I had too. So, we get to see it twice, then TSN season preview at 1am! It's been a long winter!! ;)

RedFever.
Verstappen was 8th after the morning session. He only drove 3 laps in the afternoon. He had problems with the brakes in the beginning of the second session. Couldn't drive for 45 minutes and raced half a lap in the end. He was clocking the best second section time of all drivers at that point, when something went wrong with the fueltransmission to the engine.

He was very happy with the performance, they had some reliability probs though. He's sure (and so am I) a place in the top 10 is reachable. I'd say he'll take 9th spot tonight! But we'll have to see of course...

At least he didn't stupidly smash his car into some wall during the MOST important (NOT) session of the weekend ;)

ditto.

To make things more complicated, Peugeout and Prost aren't exactly the best friends of the world nowadays.

A pity.

Andy, I left Quebec in 1995, so you can understand how much I miss RDS (especially that our friend Philippe is now out of the picture ... )!

We bitch a lot about TSN, but they're improving year after year. In 96, 97 we had no qualifying; in 98 we had qualifying in the hour preceding the race; since 99, we have live (except on a few occasions) qualifying. So now I miss RDS more for its great CART coverage!

RedFever, I thought you'd refrain from jumping to conclusions after the first day of practice ;) :) Just kidding, I can see that you're just commenting, not jumping to conclusions ...

I've got my fingers crossed for JV too, I'd love to see him at the front of the grid again battling it out - he (if he's quick) could decide the championship as he knows he can't challenge himself so he'll go for every move he can make - expect fireworks!

very impressed with BAR - hardly a surprise as i`m a jv fan..

michael...just has to be the fastest in every session..paid for it to-day but will take pole to-night..

digital coverage...did anyone with the pay-tv coverage notice the live radio conversations between wurz and his engineer..they were on the supersignal and pits and h-lights channel...very good work on that by the foa...

Last season he was hardly ever in the top ten on Friday, only to qualify 4th or 5th

Ferrari is right up with and possibly even ahead of McLaren! Jacques in 5th! Hope he stays up there.

BTW, I just got the dish installed and hooked up today and I can't wait for qualifying. That's right, the Turbo man has Speedvision and is ready to rock! Let it be known that as a parting gift, my cable company is perfectly welcome to kiss my &ss! Man it felt good to finally be able to say that! Yeah, due to Bernievision the camera coverage will still be a bit incompetent, but it'll look a lot better live and digital. BTCC will rock though! (Sorry for the digression...)

Go JV! And hey, how about Sauber? Looking pretty good so far.
