I would like to know all the books you know about internal combustion engines. I am studying mechanical engineering and i would like to take a Master in this subject. I want to know all the "Bibles" of engines! Thank you in advance!

Tifosi-Teo:

You may want to scan thru this listing at:

www.sae.org

Then do a Search on "engine books".

If you only want one book that has it all, I second Marion's recommendation of Taylor's 2-volume tome. It's pretty dated in spots but 95% of it is still as valid as the day it was originally published (1965). I've got a paperback set that was published by the MIT Press which I got from my dad. I hope they don't want 76 bucks for the paperback version. Technical books and papers on motorsport are frequently seemingly massively overpriced. Can't sell enough I suppose. If anyone has any motorsports related tech papers, I'd like to borrow and copy them!

Get thee to a library young man!!

Go to the library (or a few of them) and look at the books available before buying your own. I have bought many books in the past, and regret not looking at them before buying. Also you might see something good there that nobody here has seen or heard of.

I would recommend the books by Taylor. They are very good, and also "The Fundamentals of Internal Combustion Engines" by J. Heywood. As I recall it was very much a theory book, where Taylor has sections on mechanical design also. If I had to pick one though, it would be the Taylor set. It also contains a brilliant bibliography at the rear of the book.

Brilliant bibliography indeed, the problem is most of the writings cited are completely impossible to find now.

A lot of it will still be available. Most of it will be in a library somewhere, and you might be able to request you local library to arrange an inter-library loan for you. Also, try the internet. If you wanted a NACA paper for example, these can be bought through NASA, or some are online. Similarly Univ. of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station papers can be bought from Univ. of Illinois. etc, etc. A bit of legwork, and possibly some expenditure will get a lot of the stuff (if you were that keen). I am sure SAE papers are widely available in University libraries where auto / mechanical engineering courses are taught, and old ones can probably be ordered.

In my point of view Taylor "internal-combustion engine in theory and practice" is the book (2 Vols.) in which other are based on (many references from it). Heywood (internal combustion engines fundamentals) is a very good book, specially in combustion theory.
You can find interesting "Four stroke engine design", G.P. Blair and "internal combustion engines", C.R.Ferguson.
