Simulator ups Villeneuve's game
According to his fitness instructor [06/08/01 - 15:11]
Jacques Villeneuve / BAR
hen Jacques Villeneuve takes to his yacht moored in the Monte Carlo Harbour during the August break it will not be a time for relaxing and unwinding for the Canadian, but rather time to work on his fitness and prepare for the final five races of the 2001 season. The 30-year-old paid 25,000 pounds to have a Formula One simulator fitted in his luxury yacht that allows his to simulate race conditions and work on his fitness. The simulator, which was suggested by his fitness instructor Erwin Gollner has shown some reward as the BAR driver secured his second podium finish of the year at last weekend's German Grand Prix.
Gollner believes that by working with the simulator, which is an exact replica of the BAR's cockpit with seatbelts and a steering wheel, Villeneuve can improve his race fitness as it is fitted with weights and simulates G-force. The dummy cockpit is completely enclosed and using computers race conditions such as temperature and humidity can be matched. When using the simulator Villeneuve has to wear both his race suit and helmet in order to get the full effect, and even though he is on his yacht Gollner can keep track of his progress via the internet.
Gollner told The Sun: “He has a copy of the cockpit that he sits in, which is fixed with seatbelts and a steering wheel. He's working against weights on the steering during a session. The training we are doing is very tough, but it is necessary, so he does it. The importance of being fit in an F1 car is crucial, as any driver will tell you. Teams do not want to lose out due to human error.”
He added: “But you can't compare f1 with other sports. For a racing driver, it is not necessary that he's a quick runner. And if you look at runners, there are sprinters, 800m runners, and marathon runners. Look at skiers. There's slalom, Super G or downhill. You can't compare one with the other. Every one is a special discipline. Drivers to normal aerobic exercises, but also they should do specific training on the neck and so on. In two weeks we have four training days of about six hours each. Jacques does gym work, running and cycling. There are all good for cardiovascular performance. I would say everything helps a little bit, but it's necessary to do specific work as well.”
