I thought it would be interesting to find out what some of you know about which music some of the current and past drivers listen to. Also, are any current music groups big F1 fans?

I read Senna was a big Genesis fan (me too :)), but I wonder if he liked them when they were in their top 40 phase. Also, he was a big fan of Tina Turner. I just got a Ayrton Senna denim shirt that is pretty cool. Its denim with a Ayrton Senna helmet logo and Brazilian colors it has the words "Simply the Best" embroidered around it. Must be a reference to his affinity for Tina Turner.

If I find out that any drivers are into hip-hop or rap I will surely be disgusted.

I think that Salo has taken guitar lessons from some big-time players.

wasn't Eddie Jordan a rock drummer?

Haug has a big (Haugish?) classic rock collection.

JH likes Clapton.

MH is a mirror image of Dave Mustaine of Megadeath.

Emmo and Gordon Murray are chums with George Harrison.

Nick Mason of Pink Floyd is a huge racing fan. He has a collection of 1/43 scale racing ferraris that makes me sick! (He also has a collection of real race cars that isn't bad either ;)) I'm not sure if he's a huge F1 fan per se but I would imagine so.

Ralf Lauren owns 2, not 1 but 2, McLaren F1 road cars. So he may just be a Mac fan. (But he owns a number of stunning Ferrari's as well.) Not that he's music related or anything.

I sure hope Senna liked Genesis when Peter Gabriel was the singer and they were producing masterpieces like Supper's Ready, rather then the Sussudio crap phase......

On Mika's official website, you'll find that Mika's favorite music is J. Karjalainen (Finnish artist), Frank Sinatra and Elvis....are you surprised????

George Harrison is a big motorsports fan, and although he is no musician, so is Rowan Atkinson. He drives some himself I think. How about the Bean Mini as pacecar at Silverstone?

Damon Hill once played bass in a punk band, and Kenny Brack plays the guitar.

Dironey,

Damon Hill played in a punk band! WOW!
That is shocking. He doesn't seem to fit the image.
I can see the billing now...
The Exploited
The Sub-hum-ans
Crass
and...
Damon Hill!

Do you know the name of that band and did they ever record anything?

They were called "Sex Hitler and the Hormones". No idea if they recorded anything, but I got the impression it was just a garage band without ambitions. Hard to picture him as Damon Rotten, isn't it? ("Demon Hell" maybe...)

Bschue, Ayrton Senna appeared on stage with Tina Turner while she sang "Simply the Best" after he had won the Australian GP one year.

I was wondering if anyone has heard of a ferrari dance mix or something along those lines. I think it was 3 or 4 years ago when I heard about it, I think it featured revving engines, etc.
Thanks

RedRever: I agree w/you totally re: the Genesis thing. I also hoped too that Senna liked the real Genesis stuff, but when you hear he also liked Tina Turner --more pop-- makes you wonder if he was into the top 40 junk they put out in the '80's. Seconds Out (double live album w/Suppers Ready) was and still is one of my favorites.

I once read he loved all types of music from samba to modern...as long as its good!

Kenny - I read two books on Senna recently,
"Ayrton Senna - As Time Goes Bt" by Chris Hilton and "The Death of Ayrton Senna" by Richard Williams. I can't remember which book it was in, but I highly recommend both!!

most of the drivers seem to like rock, which seems a bit incongruous to me - drivers of cutting edge technology loving 'has been' (never was) music. but why shouldn't they, they're drivers not music critics. i guess they haven't got the time or the inclination to devote too much energy to music.

Kenny, I just clicked on your homepage from your profile. Guess I didn't need to refer you to these books as you are obviously a huge Senna fan and probably have read those books. I know in one of those two books there is mention of Senna'a musical tastes.

whiplash - But sitting down after a hot lap at qualifying and hanging your neck out like those guys do, I would probably want to sit down and mellow out to something soothing like a little Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon). If I wanted to get pumped up before running a qualifying lap, I would listen to something like Pearl Jam.

I know I'm a few years behind time, but am getting old. :(

Whiplash, oh yeah?
"has been (never was)"
Do you realise that not all would have a similar opinion on this. I for instance loathe music critics and everything they stand for... So I think it's great the drivers aren't ones.

One could say that rock is a form of art that actually takes a lot of time practising to master, it usually takes from ones performing it substancial investment of their time/effort to produce the tones with their hands/feet/instruments, not via a computer.
I won't. I just say that rock has actually songs, some better, most worse, but they are still songs. And I like songs.

Club music generally doesn't. It has themes. Some shorter, some longer but they ain't songs. It has it's place, it's great to dance to, yes, even in a party or work, when it's just a substitute of background noise, it's OK. Helluvalot better background noise than some stupid 40-song AOR radio.

But please, don't come to tell me that a music I listen to is neverwas because some cool hipster never-make-it-in-a-rockband-himself editor in Melody Maker suggested it. Believe me, I know these guys, I used to work in the same organisation with a pretty large caliber local dude myself.

And no, I don't listen to neither Tina Turner or Phil Collins. Nor Oasis.

RedFever - that was my first thought too. The music when Gabriel was at the helm was excellent. Phil Collins as the lead turned Genesis into fluff.

Damop: Not to turn this into a Genesis thread or anything, but I also think Genesis was quite good for a few years after Gabriel left. Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering are damn good albums. The pop phase came starting with "And then There Were Three", but still some good songs on that album as well.

Damon Hill in a band called "Sex Hitler and the Hormones"?!?!?!?!? I know it was about 10 posts ago but isn't there anyone else who finds that just hilarious? I'm in tears! Somebody should really bring that up in a Hill interview, whip out a guitar and ask him to play :)

OT, but speaking of great band names I was once in a punk band called "Buffy Messerschmidt and the sun-roofs from Hell" (apologies to the chocolate bunnies).

BSchue - Seconds Out was a fantastic album but I was never able to love it because it felt strange to hear Peter's lirics sung by Phil. Last time I saw the band live, it happened twice in a week in 1982.

On Wednesday at Hammersmith Oden, it was the current group with Phil singing, it was the Abacab tour. They were very good, Phil is a great showman but that's that. On Saturday, they were playing in Milton Keynes what the called Six of the Best, it was the last act of Peter's WOMAD festival. Basically it was the same band (Phil, Tony, Mike, Chester, etc) in reunion for the first time since 75 with Peter. Now, that was awesome!!! Being able to make a comparison between Phil and Peter as lead singer and performer......Peter blew Phil's socks aways (imagine Phil as Hakkinen, good and solid, and Peter as Senna, simple genius!!!). To top it all, during the last encore, Steve Hackett joined the set and the entire original band was on stage. It was a wild night!!! (I hear the repeated it a few months later in Paris, but I am not sure).

I love all the albums with Peter but I also like A Trick of the Tail, the first with Phil's singing. It was still Genesis!!!

RedFever: I ordered the new CD (don't even know the name), but its pretty much a Best Of album. Too bad all of it is from the pop era. The last song however is a new rendition of "Carpet Crawlers" with new voice over from Peter. Its pretty cool, you should try to listen to it. My two year old son also loves it and asks me to play it all the time. Being a two year old,he also likes Phil's "Tarzan" soundtrack. Very pop, but he gets into the drums. you must admit Phil is still one hell of a drummer.

Also, sort of off topic and back to F1 and my kid, I have my son trained on most of the top F1 drivers. When we're driving down the road, I'll start talking about racing and yell out a first name like "Mika" and he'll say Hakinen, he knows most of them (Schumacher, Coultard, Frentzen). Also, I made sure he can respond to "Gilles" and "Ayrton".

I think I read a few threads back maybe a few weeks ago you were expecting a kid. Hope you can get the joys out of it I do especially when it comes to sharing a passion with them for F1 like we do

force ten, i do realise many, maybe most, people won't share my view (about , but i said it anyway (just a bit bitchy).
everyone has different tastes for everything, but drivers do seem to list mainstream rock/pop music as their favourite, it's an easy option, gives them a brief necessary diversion (as bschue pointed out), it provides entertainment which doesn't need to be thought too much about and that's important because they see music as entertainment rather than a major force in life. i may offend some, but i feel that if you are passionate about music, you would not list rock or pop as your favourite. i don't think f1 drivers (i'm presumptious as i don't know any) are, in general, passionate about music, or perhaps even anything other than driving.

Whiplash, if you think I am not passionate, why do you think I flamed you? I am very much passionate and I like to listen rock very much, thank you. Not all rock is Brian Adams.

I may be completely wrong - but didn't Damon Hill appear on the latest Def Leppard album ("Euphoria") as a guest guitarist ?

Say, which one was with Genesis for "That's All"? I kinda like that song

------------------
"Hey there, all you middle men
Throw away your fancy clothes
And while you're out there sittin' on a fence
So get off your ass and come down here
'Cause rock 'n' roll ain't no riddle man
To me it makes good, good sense"

Bschue -

expecting one? he is going to be 10 this summer!!!! and of course a Ferrari fan. He coined the name Kakkinen for Mika, which I guess is self-explanatory..... ;)

Phile and Chester Tompson doing the sincronized solo.....amazing!! Yes, he is an amazing drummer, too bad he became a pop artist

Micheals likes Phil collins (who he lives next door to) and Micheal Jacksons
Eddie only admits to likin Van Morrision doesnt eddie live in Van Morrisions back garden--hang on wait a minute im begining to see a pattern forming ;)
I cannot beleive Mika and Elvis
its like physically impossible elvis is so cool ,so different,so interesting so unMika
I've got some serious thinking to do ;) ;) ;)
The must have hidden, very well hidden depths.
ejs also mega into elvis, now thats more like it
That ferrari dance album is supposed to be very good.
It made up of engine noises from all the different circuits.
I also heard something about a david hasselhof single "fly schumi fly"
but i swear thats all i had to do with it--
o.k!!!!!!!!!!!i never touched the damn thing
Then there is Chris Rea la passione the soundtrack to the ferrari inspired film .
He also wrote a song about Senna-sauade(meaning grief respect and sorry at the loss of a loved one)
There is also a jazz album (more my kinda thing)by Peter King called Tamburello documenting the emotions of that day
I've been trying to get my hands on it for ages but its just not available in ireland
maybe its better that way
