Going through 1966 issues of Competition Press/Autoweek, I ran across mentions of a driver from Iceland named Severir Thoroddeson competing in F3 events. In a year end review, it was mentioned that based on his improvement over the latter portion of the season, he figured to be a contender in 1967, but also noted that the way he was driving, he wasn't likely to hang around at the F3 level for much longer.

Does anyone have any additional info on him?

Amazing seeing this post more than half a year later. Search BB

He is currently co-commentating on F1 in Iceland. If have any questions on his career I'll simply give him a call and ask him.

I had never heard about this driver until I recieved my recently acquired lot of 60s/70s "Sport-Auto" mags. And I was gooing to quiery about him ! So thanks Karlth for the info ! Among the things I wonder about him, the first his about his name. Probably one of the most often mispelled in Motor Racing history I guess (along with Thorkild Thyrring) ! The one I came most often across is : Svedir Thoroddson. Could you confirm this ? Do you think you could get a short summary of his racing career ? That would be fantastic ! Svedir was to be part of the de Sanctis factory F3 team for 1967, but apparently the Roman constructor finally did not field an official team that year, he only help private scuderie (among which the Scuderia Madunina IIRC). Was that the end of his international racing career ?
Thanks again for your offer, I'm looking forward to learn more about a man who his probably Iceland's all-time greatest driver !

Rob is correct: Sverrir Thoroddsson.

I know that he is good friends with Frank Williams and they are in regular contact.

Cheers
Karl Thoroddsen ;)

I'll give him a call.

Iceland's most remarkable racing driver though is one Omar Ragnarsson:

Multiple National Rally Champion.
Iceland's most popular TV personality.
Iceland's best known pilot, lands regularly ontop of small mountains.
Seen any tv footage of volcanic eruptions in Iceland? Probably shot by him.
Iceland's first stand up comic.
Wrote 2-3 major pop music hits.
Novelist.
Father of 5-6 children.

It goes without saying that we are a small country. :)

I called him and he's glad to answer any questions you might have.

Post any questions on his thread and I'll compile them together and sent them to him.

Cheers
Karl

I sort of figured that Competition Press/Autoweek might have gotten that wrong, thanks for to correct spelling Rob and confirmation Karl.

Karl,

Thanks for the information  Sverrir was listed as having a great duel with, I believe Jonathan Williams, at Enna-Pergusa in 1966. That and one of the Monza races the same year were good races for him.

I too am curious about what happened with his career from 1967 on. His driving certainly impressed the writer from Competition Press/Autoweek...even if he couldn't get his name spelled correctly!.

Iceland's most remarkable racing driver though is one Omar Ragnarsson:

I knew when I posted this that I could only be proven wrong :) But I thought it would be a driver of these "Off Road F1" or whatever they are called (you know these strange machines with big V8s doing some trial on artificial muddy hills) !
About our friend Sverrir I have no particular questions. Just how did he get into racing, how hard was it for someone coming from Iceland in the sixties to get into big time racing on the continent, how come he seam to have dissapear from the racing scene (no injury I hope). Plus if he has a "racing CV" on hand that would be great ! Thanks again for your offer karlth !

Dear Mr Thurman,

I cama across your article about what became of me. I am still alive and kicking living in iceland and following up on motorracing. I am in the aviation buisness and work some specified jobs for my old friend Frank Williams. I still have some good contacts with Alan mann and Mario Andretti who are good personal friends of mine. I saw that you had seen reports in Autoweek in 1966 of my races in Italy at Monza And Enna. I would much appriciate if you could fax me a coppy of this ofr my memories.

Yours faithfully,

Sverrir Thoroddsson

Mr. Sverrir, I was just one young spectator in the stand watching your races at Vallelunga, Monza and Pergusa in the 60s... I'm proud I can speak with you in the TNF!

I remember you and your new problematic BT30 at Pergusa. I seem to remember it was red.

Did you have some F. 2 tests (team Frank Williams?) at the end of 1967 season, or I simply do not remember well?

Nice to meet you! :)

I have mention Mr. Thoroddsson's arrival on TNF on the Introductions thread, in case anyone fails to look at this thread.

I too used to watch this gentleman racing years ago.

A warm welcome from me too.

As he says himself above, he is on the aviation business. And if you google his address you'll find a nice Porsche and a Mercedes in his front yard.

As the thread is so old, I confess I didn't read anymore than Sverrir's post to confirm his email.
