Such a lousy Mickey-mouse circuit with no place to pass except for the pit-stops ( )

BE: Circuits like this should be dropped from hosting F1 races.
Please, stop the procession, make overtaking possible in all venues.
(but leave Monaco alone ;))

I agree. Hungaroring is so boring it is almost unbearable. I accept the processions in Monaco due to its history, the glamour and the thrill of seeing cars on those narrow streets. Hungaroring should be dropped now.

Two meagre highlights in the race. Alesi's neat manoevre past PDLR and Mika in a Mac on fumes chasing Ralf in a Williams with cooked brakes and tyres.
That's more than I ever expected from Hungaroring.

The only guy who overtook was ALESI!:stoned:
Even the great Hakkinen who was lapping 2 seconds faster than Ralf couldnt overtake him when he got to his tail.

I would really like to see how bad all these drivers will do once they reach Alesi's age.
I cant believe Hakkinen even thought of retiring at his age....when he should go and get the title again. I guess he doesnt have the rage and ambition to do so anymore.

A boring race, because of a boring circuit, but I didn't want to miss it. The biggest highlight was the post race celebrations.

At least Qualifying was interesting.

It's probably a blast to drive... and qualifying was cool, but the straights are just too short.

I think the track is great...the cars' change of direction is amazing. A bit of width and a sweeping corner or two would help. The worst thing about the circuit seems to be the surface...off line the track is just too dirty to even attempt a move, a re-surface would be nice also.

I propose three things:

1) Let's make a petition to have the Hungaroring removed from next year's schedule.

2) Kick Bernie Ecclestone in the nuts for designing this track!

3) Kick Bernie Ecclestone even harder in the nuts for extending the contract with the Hungaroring.

This isn't racing! Yes there was drama--seeing Hakkers go nuts against R. Schumacher was great. But what a horrible track. They could easily redesign its layout to improve the chance of passing. After turn five, they could have the cars run straight toward the pits--through the forest--then return to what is now turn six. This would almost double the length of the track (who needs 77 friggin laps anyway?), and allow for some long-straights.

The track does not make for a lot of passes. Kind of lame really.

Basically, the way to win is to qualify first and don't break in the race.

First off, Bernie did not design this track.;)
The track is a good testament of driver skill, it just needs to modified slightly as per my earlier post. I think with a few good mods, it could be a GREAT track, one that everyone would like.

and to think Ralf rates the track as 9 out of ten  reading the latest F1 Magazine, it sounds like the track layout was the result the direct of a quick drawing by Bernie himself. Maybe he's too proud of it to drop it? :)

Yes, a boring track indeed but demands a very high level of concentration due to the very high number of laps.

I've never enjoyed watching Hungaroring. Last year was equally bad so I didnt look forward to last night's either.

I think BE realises the drawbacks of the circuit - but i am pretty sure it is the tobacco sponsorship than anything else that keeps Hungary on the calendar. There are not many circuits left in Europe which allow tobacco advertising. Hungary is one of them.

JdeRosa, I'm pretty sure that Bernie did design or have part in the design of the Hungaroring. That was indicated by the announcer on ORF1.

Apparently a lot of the drivers enjoy driving the Hungaroring, and I to enjoy driving it on GP2/GP3 on my PC. But......

I can only remember two races that were any good: 1989 and 1997.

the rest were boring processions....you always get cars bunched up...you let yourself get excited a la Hakkinen and Ralf...then they pootle around for 20 laps unable to do anything.

Ban the Hungaroring I say! and give a decent circuit a chance...lord knows there are plenty about which deserve a world championship place!

I used to look fwd to Hungary .. mostly because you would get a different grid (a la Hill putting an Arrows on the second row). But lately the grid in Hungary has been just like the grids everywhere else. :(

by my count, the Hungaroring has six 3rd-gear corners, three 4th-gear corners, and one 5th gear corner. in terms of demands on driver skill, my guess is that this circuit has it all over, at least, Monza, Imola, Montreal, Hockenheimring, Indy, Melbourne, Magny-Cour, and the A1Ring.

but as for RACING, that's another question. (tightening up the final corner might work wonders.)

opp_lock, the track IS lined--with dust.:)

Hateful motor racing circuit, but excellent circuit to measure one's driving skills. I've never enjoyed motor racing at the Hungaroring, but, perhaps modifications in lengthening the straight could potentially save this track. Unless this happens in the foreseeable future, scrap this venue and allow the A-1 ring to survive once Moscow arrives.

The funny thing is, while we fans may not like it, the drivers all agree it is an excellent circuit. If I remember correctly the problem with the Hungaroring is that they cannot make changes to improve the passing areas on the track because the circuit only owns the land the track actually sits on.

I wondered why Hakkinen didnt try going around the outside at the top of the hill. Gawd, the balls you have to have to try that one. Works in GPIII but in a real F1 car, wow. But that was his only chance. Of course in typical McClaren fasion it didnt matter.

About Hungaroring:

Driver challenge:up:
View for spectators
Dust:down:

Have you seen how when a lapped car moved away from the racing line, it rose clouds of dust into the air? The start resembled a start given under rainy conditions.
What they should do is remove much of the dust from the track. I think they could do this by using water in the night before the race in the same way you see it done on city streets in the early hours of the morning.
This should reduce the grip difference between the racing line and the rest of the track, thus making overtaking less difficult.
