I was just lloking at the track listings on silhouet.com/motorsport/, and was reading under the Rio de Janeiro (Jacarapegua) circuit listing, and it has this quote "The 1.864 mile "roval" track was built to host the CART series, although for 2001 the series was due to revert to the GP track until the city's mayor cancelled the race."

Does anyone know why the race was cancelled? I would have thought Rio would want all the promotion it could get, or was the mayor becoming fed up with the CART officials like a lot of people on here seem to be

Polotics was the main issue. It is a bit complicated to explain. The Mayor of Rio and the Guy who runs the state/province/territory didn't like eachother. This almost happened to the Brazilian GP too.

Basically, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, didn't want to pay the cost of the race, due with rivalty with Fittipaldi. That caused a fight for the CART event between other brazilian cities. The candidates:

1 - city: Salvador. State: Bahia. Would be a street race. The most likely, at this point.

2 - city: Goiânia. State: Goiás. Probably they would use the oval track

3 - city: Curitiba. State: Paraná. Normal racetrack. (oh, please, let Curitiba win, let Curitiba win)

The mayor of rio kicked the CART series and the Superbikes out of Rio for political reasons.........recently the mayer of rio has apologized to CART and wants the CART series to return to the roval in Rio - as long as Emmerson Fittipaldi is not the promoter.....The mayor of Rio and Emmo are at odds with eachother....

Exactaly it:

I'll only add wo things: the mayor of Rio de Janeiro city is named Cesar Maia (Coyote...Tá maluco?) and Cesar doesn't like Emerson due EF was against Cesar on election and voted in another candidate.

Since Cesar won the elections and Emerson was the promoter of Rio GP, the race was canceled due their "rivalry".

It'll have race in Rio only if EF is out.

Hey, I like this idea of write in protuguese.
We should do more thighs like that. O que acham?

I vote for Curitiba too.
Goiânia track is with tarmac problems.
Why not Interlagos? The São Paulo mayor, Marta Suplicy, said that she is interested in that, during the F1 GP.

Coyote,

Não se preocupe. Meu único temor é ter Garotinho ainda mais perto de mim!!!

dutra,

Nós já tentamos fazer isto. But there were a lot of complaints.
