There has been much talk on this bulletein board about how Toyota are expected to do next year. And there are a couple of threads about RedBull starting a North American team. In general the idea of new teams always stirs up alot of talk. So this is probably common F1 knowledge, but I do not know. What team has had the most successful debut?

I think the most impressive debut was the Wolf-Ford of 1977 with Jody Scheckter driving. It won its first race in Argentina, it won in Monaco and also in Canada (the home of owner Walter Wolf). Jody was runner-up for the WDC and Wolf was fourth in the WCC with a one car team.

I suppose it could be argued that the Mercedes-Benz W196 of 1954 was the most successful debut. It also won its first race (in France) and went on to win four out of the remaining six races that season. Fangio won the WDC. There was no WCC in those days.

But that was a very long time ago.....

More recently, Sauber had a fairly memorable debut. At the 1993 South African GP at Kyalami, Karl Wendlinger qualified 10th and JJ Lehto started 6th, ahead of a Benetton, a McLaren, and a Ferrari, among others. Wendlinger retired with an engine failure, but Lehto finished 5th, albeit two laps down and behind the Minardi of Christian Fittipaldi.

It's not as impressive a record as Wolf's, but given the increased professionalism in 1993 opposed to 1977, I think it still deserves mention.

Yes, Wolf made the most succesful debut ever.
But it was not really a new team. It was Frank Williams's team that had been bought by Canadian millionaire Walther Wolf and the rebadged and lightly restaffed. By that token, Benetton were also a new team in 1986 instead of a continuation of Toleman.

My vote would go to Ligier in 1976. A team that had not competed in F1 before. In the hands of Jacques Laffite, the Ligier-Matra scored 20 points including a pole-position and 3 podiums (1x 2nd place, 2x 3rd place). And that with only a single entry.

No really new team has done better  .

Too bad Alain had to go and screw it up

Walter Wolf is not Canadian, actually. He is from Slovenia. He moved to Canada when he was very young.

Actually, BAR's debut weren't THAT bad, as JV qualified 11th I think. Their reliabilty is of course a different story.

So qualifying almost top ten at your first race is a laugh?! Remember that they outqualified Williams a few times, using the same engines. HAH!

March in 1970 must also be a contender. Pole in first race and won second or third (driven by JYS for Tyrell rather than the works team).

I would say Alfa romeo made the best debute in F1.
Since 1950 was the first F1 season you can say that was the debute. 1,2,3,4 in qual and a 1,2,3 in the race, lapping all the other cars 2 times. :)

Recently Jordan, Sauber, and Stewart were all very impressive newcomers.

I'm too lazy to check the stats but I believe Arrows did a very good first year.

Alfa Romeo, winning its first race in its first start and winning the championship in its first year.

2 6th places, 1 2nd (a lot of drivers fell off the road), and a bunch of DNQ / DNPQs. They didn't exactly set the world on fire.

Lola, when they re-launched in 1997.....

But seriously, the Tobacco Company thats a formula one team, had resonably good debut. Qualifyeed well.... but, bot finishing a race until 6 starts, but that was ok, one spot out of the points, the Number one driver took 8 starts to have a finish, in 15th..., Jvi was exstatic though.
Reliability was their big problem, and Horsepower...
Minardi were often ahead of them,
BAR, 0 points in 1999, their goal in 200, to finish the championship ahead of minardi...
