from Formula1.com:
==================
"This new logo will be the distinctive sign of Toyota's presence in formula1. As every logo has its own significance, the meaning of Toyota's new logo is:
* The whole shape of the mark represents 'T' as in Toyota
* The top and left parts represent '1' as in formula1 and the number 1
* The left and right parts form a 'V' as in victory.
* Right part represents 'F' as in formula1 or Flame. It images flame and expresses passion."
The new logo will be displayed when the team makes their racing entry next year."

So, I don't understand going to a distinctive F1-only logo, unless that logo will also become the standard for Toyota passenger cars.
Besides the three interlocking rings look better. And you're right: it does look like the Bridgestone moniker.
All in all I give it a C+, no more.

I guess that what 'Muddly Talker' says is true then "IF" is just F1 backwards

But on the other hand maybe the Toyota gurus wanted to have a big IF

Shaun, its the modern world. Normal corporate stuff. All the written **** as you put it is not for the normal public, its mostly for team itself. The team would also have a mission statment, and other corporate principles. These would also be enunciated in writing. The logos try to reflect some of those principles. To most practical people especially outsiders, its all a load of crap. But from the individuals who work there, and to their supporters and suppliers, its supposed to reflect something of the company itself. At the end of the day, its not evil or anything like that. I don't worry if it looks good or bad. To me its just a logo, which the company has tried to attach some corporate meanings to. But I won't even attempt to remember those meanings, although I might remember that there are supposed to be some their.
Some logos have a sense of history though: BMW's propellor has, the MB star has been around a long time, same with Ford's although they fiddle with it now and then, Rolls Royce's now means nothing to me, the Audi one traces back to Auto Union so it means something, I like Ferrari's, see Lambourgine's as a cheap imitation of Ferrari's, the rest mean little to me. Just logos.

And besides most designers are be aware that logo's that use recognizable writing are easier remembered. Coke is an example of it. And everyone knows what's written on the white spots of the Ferraris when they are not allowed to do tobacco advertising. I even think about Marlboro if I see something written that uses the same font (altough I'm a non smoker). Same goes for the other F1 cars that are tobacco sponsored.
But maybe Toyota wanted to be cryptic about it.

But it could be worse: it could look like that damned cow's head (longhorn?) logo they adopted about 10 years ago.

Looks like something the singer's girlfriend draws up to put on flyers for for some high school heavy metal band.

Couldn't agree more!

I don't think it's too bad really, but I would expect more.
