“That's the kind of spirit I expected.” [21/09/01 - 03:07]

Double CART champion and former Formula One driver, Alex Zanardi, has woken from his medically induced coma and been informed of the horrific injuries sustained at last weekend's American Memorial in Germany where he was involved in a high speed accident that resulted in the loss of both legs. The Italian driver displayed the fighting spirit he is renowned for when his wife Daniela told him the news, stating that as long as he still had her and their son, three-year- old Niccolo, then it was going to be okay.

“She had just told Alex about his legs and he said that was OK, he didn't care because he still had her and Niccolo,” teammate Tony Kanaan explained. “That's the kind of spirit I expected from him.”

It has also been revealed that the Italian driver cheated death by a mere ten minutes and if it wasn't for the quick actions of the CART safety crew, he may not have had the chance to see his wife and son again. Fans knew the accident was extremely serious and that Alex's life hung in the balance in the days immediately following the accident after losing 70% of his body's blood supply.

“It was the equivalent to a military evacuation because it was just like he'd stepped on a land mine,” revealed Dr Terry Trammell. “Both femoral arteries were ruptured and Alex was bleeding profusely, he was in big trouble. I grabbed a belt from one of the safety workers and made a tourniquet for the left side and put a pressure dressing on the right side. Getting the bleeding stopped and maintaining an airway were the priorities, but we were really racing against time. At best, it was 50/50 whether he would be alive when he got to Berlin.”

“The ICU doctors at Berlin said that in another 10- 15 minutes they wouldn't have had a chance to save him, it was that close,” added Dr. Steve Olvey. “You couldn't have a better guy than Terry in a situation like that and he did a great job. He had the bleeding stopped, but Alex had lost 70 percent of the blood in his body and was still bleeding internally. He had four of five pelvic fractures, which causes bleeding, and a blood buildup around his liver. When you have massive hemorrhaging, it affects the ability of your blood to clot and you don't know what's going on inside. You can bleed to death internally, especially in Alex's situation.”

Now the long rehabilitation process begins, with continuing surgery to clean the wounds before being fitted for prosthetic limbs. Many ask what's ahead for Alex, however at this stage, all he really cares about is the fact that he is still going to be around to experience the joy of watching his small son grow up into a man.

It really must have a been a horrific accident. In a German motorsport magazine, I read that they needed over sixty (!) blood conserves in order to save Alex... :(

Nevertheless, two thumbs up for Alex
It looks as if he will have the spirit to get over it.

For once, I actually think I can speak for everyone on this BB. The reasons we like Zanardi is his whole attitude to life. Zanardi, you rock:up:

Zanardi is now even greater in my eyes.

Great news to hear he is okay under the cirumstances, his courage is astonishing

Extra plus for the the safety and medical crew at the track too for knowing what to do and how quick

Hope to see you back in some form in the motorsportworld Alex. Your family is lucky to have you.

The doctors did a fantastic job saving him. I'm glad to hear that Alex hasn't lost sight of what's truly important. He's a fighter. I wish him the very best in his recovery.

Thank goodness. I know Alex can do this and I hoped he would see the value of being able to be a father and a husband (regardless of what some have posted).

thats the sadest thing ive heard in ages.....

id kind of gotten 'used' to the alex z situation over the last week... but jesus...

call me a big girly wuss but man... i actually burst into tears after i read this part...

"The Italian driver displayed the fighting spirit he is renowned for when his wife Daniela told him the news, stating that as long as he still had her and their son, three-year- old Niccolo, then it was going to be okay. "

sadly i lost a daughter and my partner in an accident, and just the thought of it, and the thought of alex being able to muscle up and accept the **** hand hes been delt, makes me wonder.....

thats brilliant and so damn sad at the same time..... good luck to alex. at the end of the day, hes hopefully gonna be ok, and hell get to be a dad and a husband to the importaint people in his life...

The full impact of the situation probably has yet to sink in for Alex, but this is just the sort of classy and courageous response I expected to hear from him. I'm sure he is going to meet his future challenges in the same spirit, though for sure he will also have his down times too.

And very professional and thorough work by the track and medical workers. Whatever else one can say about CART, their safety people are top notch.

I had a feeling that when it became clear that Alex was to survive, that like Clay Regazzoni, Jason Watt, Phillipe Streiff & (is it?) Sam Schmidt, that he would cope admirably with his new life despite the many difficulties it now entails & this confirms it - truly happy to know this, God Bless, Alex

These safety guys do a great job. Once upon a time, there used to be some ritual at races (in NASCAR), where the safety guys would wave to the drivers, or something like that, just to let the racers know they wre there. What do these guys get paid, I wonder? They do such spectacular work.

Amazing story.

Morris Nunn sounds a bit happier now. He got a phone call from Alex Zanardi asking him who won the pole in Rockingham.

In the past Mo was devastated when Clay Regazzoni broke his back and lost the use of his legs while driving for his Ensign team. Apparently, Clay races cars (or is it karts?) with hand controls.

He is facing this head on and that is the only way to do it. They though Alex would be badly hurt that time at Spa in the Lotus but he was able to go on to much greater heights. :) Now he has a new challenge to meet and it is nice to see so many who are thinking of him. Is there anywhere we can send him a message?

I believe it was a few years ago, when CART held a celebrity kart race before the Homestead GP, where Clay raced in his hand-controlled kart, against Mario and some current CART drivers.
