Quote from F1-live.com:

The end of an era
Murray Walker set to say goodbye [25/09/01 - 08:15]

Goodbye Murray

The voice of Formula One, Murray Walker, will be commentating his last race this weekend at the American Grand Prix. Walker, who was expected to make the season finale in Japan his final event, has announced that due to the fact that the championship battle is already over with Michael Schumacher taking the honours at round 13 in Hungary, he will end his 52 year career by bringing the curtain down at Indianapolis instead.

‘Murray moments' are well known to his legion of fans throughout the world and when the news was announced at the beginning of the year that this would be his final season in the commentary box, many acknowledged that Formula One just wouldn't be the same. ITV pitlane reporter, James Allen has taken over for Murray several times this season already and it appears as if he will try to fill the void left behind in 2002.

Drivers and fans alike will miss the magic moments that Walker is renowned for, however he is pleased to be saying his goodbyes during prime time viewing at Indianapolis rather than the wee hours of the morning when the season finale at Japan is due to be broadcasted. Goodbye and good luck for the future Murray, we shall miss you.

Whenever I've been to the UK and had the chance to watch a race on TV, I thoroughly enjoyed Murray's comments. It's unique! Something that will definitely be missed!

Despite all of Murray's mistakes, and that fact that most of us can commentate on a race from our living rooms, and get the facts right before Murray has even got them wrong, he will be sorely missed by all of us, and I know that Sunday's race is going to be a very emotional time in my living room. I've already got the tissues ready, because I know I won't be able to control myself!

Good luck and happy retirement, Murray!

For those of us who receive the ITV-F1 coverage

Buy a new blank VHS tape.

Record the US GP

Keep tape safe forever!

Good luck Murray, thanks for everything

That puts it so very well.

Murray is a star, not because he is an ever-slick professional, but because he is just another one of us race-fans, but one with 100% enthusiasm, 150% commitment and 200% "trousers on fire". Thanks for everything, Murray!

F1 will never be the same without him. F1 would be much less popular if there was never a Murray Walker :(

Murray just adds another dimension to a race.

Sometimes when you watch the GP review tapes and you see an incident or move that you originally thought was quite exciting when you first saw it...but now it doesn't seem that special.

That's what Murray adds. His words add a level of excitement to a race that would otherwise not exist.

Farewell and good luck Murray~
You wern't just a great commentator, you were a great narrator.

Who can ever forget Murrays cries of "OH GOD NO" when Michael Schumacher clattered into the back of Coulthard at Spa 98?

Faaaaaaaaaaaantastic.

I bumped into Murray when he was checking in for a Coventry flight with Paul Stoddart after the Monaco GP. He was a thoroughly nice bloke and didn`t mind stopping for a photo. Exactly the same demeanour you see of him on TV, smiley and upbeat :)

One of the reasons F1 is worth watching. He will be sadly sadly missed in the commentary box on a Sunday.

Look forward to reading his upcoming book

Just think of all the F1 races you've ever heard about, Murray was probably there..! Its definitely the end of an era at the US Grand Prix :( I'll miss him, in future when Montoya is shaping up to pass Ralf for the championship and the crowd are on their feet... and James Allen is bollocking on about Ferrari. Or when the rain puts Jos Verstappen in the lead at Spa, or everytime a Minardi runs in the points, or when DC finally does become World Champ :)

whenever I think of a race i've seen on TV I can hear Murray's voice, its going to be strange when he's not around. I wish him all the best, and hope he goes out in style  I reckon he'll be stopping his startwatch, cutting the atmosphere with a cricket stump and checking if the beak of Hakkinens chicken is pulling ahead ;)

Its a shame he wont be at Japan though.

I just cant imagine having to sit through James Allen babble on when we could have been listening to Murray.

I wish him all the best. :)

Murray is a living legend in motorsport. If that;s not a great commentator, then I'm a chinaman.;)
