...Emanuele Pirro went from 16^th to 17^th, engine trouble having hampered progress on Friday, but at least he was happier than Andrea de Cesaris, handling problems in the fast corners and the normal lack of straightline speed of the Dallara keeping Andrea in 20^th place, a come-down, this, for the man who led the 1983 race for 18 laps...

...One of the incidents had been caused by Philippe Alliot writing off a brand new Ligier chassis after his car had become airborne. And his car had become airborne because, according to Philippe, Andrea de Cesaris had been dawdling along in the middle of the track after a quick lap and had simply turned in on Alliot as the Frenchman tried to go by. The Ligier hit the Dallara with its right-front wheel and flew into the air. Alliot was lucky to escape unhurt when the car crashed back onto the track. He was furious, so furious that he marched down to Dallara pit and attempted to clobber de Cesaris with a trolley jack! Fortunately for Andrea, a couple of mechanics were able to bring some restraint. And, at the end of it all, the Italian was 18^th on the grid while Alliot was 21^st. That didn’t help either...

RIP Andrea. Utterly terrible news. You prepare for the worst with young Bianchi and then.. this. Poor Andrea (TNF member), he must be shattered at this news - I know I am.  Even now it's not really sunk in.

 

As a driver, it's easy to forget how good he could be. 1991 at Belgium being one example, but there were other occasions. Sometimes spoilt by somewhat needless accidents but he had pace and to stay in the sport as long as he did showed something. Towards the end of his F1 career, he was very impressive in developing cars.

 

I met and interviewed him in 2006 at the Grand Prix Masters at Silverstone. He was patient and kind and a good interviewee. But what I noticed the most was how relaxed and how happy, smiling away he was. Clearly the pressures of a long racing career had just dissipated away.

 

His wife - I forget her name unfortunately - was with him that day, equally as patient and devoted to Andrea. My thoughts are with her, his family and friends.

All this these years surviving serious accidents in F1 and he dies in a motorcycle accident. I don't know, maybe I just don't get it. I started watching F1 in 1988 and I had a little soft spot for Andrea de Cesaris because the press was picking on him all the time. Then in 1991 I was watching the Belgium Grand Prix and when his Jordan failed my heart sunk. I just wished he won one race in his career.

When ever they mentioned his name it always brought me to smile. Andrea was one of the most enjoyable drivers in F1. He always seemed happy to be there and drive, I never remember him to whine about anything.

It was a sad day for me, (one of the saddest) when I heard about Andrea's death. I needed more than 10 hours to get back. Everything was said about Andrea's career so I should not spend more words about that, just want to say that he was a bravest and luckiest driver in F1. He had so many accidents in F1 and he has never been injured seriously. Also I want to say that I will continue to post pictures and articles of him as I did before. Rest in peace Andrea.

Echoing Attitude's impressions above, we met de Cesaris in Pit Lane on a late Sunday at the USGP in Phoenix, 1991. Maybe 9:00. He was exhausted but very nice to our group of four, and "posed" for a couple candids. Clearly a lovely guy just where he wanted to be and seeming to respect his good fortune.

Thanks for the pics; I won't forget him.  I have the Grand Prix Masters Andrea cap, Tyrrell, Sauber, Jordan models, but the Rial one by Spark is a bit expensive...... If only there was an affordable Alfa 182 model

What is going on with De Cesaris, the Roman Ligier driver? After the triple roll one week ago in Zelweg, a difficult period has started for this quick driver but the team manager doesn’t love so much. Guy Ligier, the team owner, asked him to go away. He says he paid too many millions (Lira) thanks to his accidents. Four broken chassis: 100 millions (Lira) expenses. At the Hilton elevator entrance he said: “Andrea? Vada al diavolo” (Vada al diavolo is an idiot. It is a little bit more polite way to say “**** off”…). Yesterday at the circuit he never watched to his face. De Cesaris was praying to drive even under the rain but the mechanics were laughing on his face: “with the Italian we don’t want to work anymore” they said to the engineers. So De Cesaris was more than 30 minutes in his car, waving his arms to get someone start his engine. Despite of this, in the morning, under the rain, he was the quickest. In Ligier they don’t care, they just want him to go away. De Cesaris starts again his “tour” between
the F1 teams. He was sent away in 1981 from McLaren because he damaged too many cars. The following year he was in Alfa with the team manager at that time, Corbari. The Roman driver was growing up. Then he went to Ligier and had an average season. It seems he was going to Ferrari but Arnoux pushed hard to stay. Until one month ago he was still No 1 driver in Ligier but then his team
mate, Laffite was able to get twice the podium in Silverstone and Nurburgring. De Cesaris was able to get very close to the podium only ones, in Monaco.  And then that flight in Zeltweg. He is preparing his “staff”. “I want to go to Brabham” he says. But BMW is hiding away. Olivetti says that the sponsored drivers are Piqued and Surer. So De Cesaris may be without any car in Monza? It is too
early to say that. In this world (F1) where lies are half-truths, maybe the Roman driver could be helped by Marlboro to take Surer’s seat in Brabham. Yesterday both BMW and Olivetti showed their intention in deal again the matter. Maybe from next Tuesday de Cesaris will be Ecclestone’s driver. Well, it seems almost sure.

Someone pointed out in the comments section that at 1.54 as he is rounding Tosa, he has a tic that causes his eyes to roll back. (You can see it in the rear view mirror of the Alfa).  I wonder whether he was able to control that during his racing or whether it affected him in any way?

Even though he's been gone for a few years, hopefully his remembrance, heritage and memories of his racing spirit never dies out.

 

When there is enough of time for that, then I think there will be a few de Cesaris stories to share for eventually from mine part too.

If, like me, you relish good memories of Andrea at the wheel of Alfas in 1980/82/83, (and in the Jordan 191 and 194), we must surely lament that he was unable to realise his true potential in Formula 1.  I believe he was good not just for at least one Grand Prix victory, but also for the Championship in the early ‘80s.  And this isn’t just wishful thinking – I can explain it all with perfect logic . . . and I do, in my article, ‘Andrea, What If?’  Part One, (of three), is now posted here.

De Cesaris was De Crasheris!! But at times also blamed for other people accidents. He was at times very good, never a champion but should have won races. More than many who have made F1 grids

Especially when I finally found out some of the very old Murray Walker Grand Prix Years and of course they had some interesting, but sometimes quite short stories about the departed one.

 

I know that I also have some old Italian magazines and some Austrian magazines as well which had even more stories about the departed one. Some of them were really good. Especially if they were written by Heinz Prüller back then.
