Watch out Keir!

Thanks Barry :)

The irony of this landmark, though, is that when I did the new improved WATN update thread, this "Old" thread got more posts! (I know why, on search BB, unless I put both names for a driver, the second & newer thread doesn't come up....)

Anyway, enough griping!

Keep those contributions coming, old, new or any other thread!!! It is always appreciated

Odd bit of news...

18 February 2004
Racing driver fails to overturn divorce settlement
Source: Divorce-Online Ltd

Former racing driver Guy Edwards has failed to win permission to challenge a marriage settlement which he claimed gave his former wife more than half of their £18.7m fortune.

Mr Edwards, who grew up in the city and attended exclusive Liverpool College in Mossley Hill, was one of the four drivers at the 1976 German Grand Prix who pulled Niki Lauda from the burning wreck of his Ferrari and was awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal for bravery.

Since leaving the world of motor racing, Macclesfield-born Mr Edwards, 61, has made his fortune as a freelance sponsorship hunter, with deals worth millions of pounds. Although he lives in the south of France, his divorce hearings took place at the High Court in London.

He wanted to argue at the Court of Appeal that his wife Daphne's lump sum figure of £5.25m should be cut to £3.65m and a £1m joint fund should be set up to pay for his future tax liabilities.

Mr Justice Bodey had accepted the wife's estimation of the former couple's wealth - £18,764,000 - after criticising Mr Edwards and his financial adviser, Colin Vandervell, for not revealing all the assets of the marriage.

The couple met in 1980 and lived together from 1981 although they did not marry until 1986 when he was 43 and she was 30.

Their marriage, during which they had two children now aged 17 and 15, broke down in 2001.

Lord Justice Thorpe, refusing permission to take the case to the Court of Appeal, said Mr Edwards was "an extremely talented entrepreneur who in order to avoid UK rates of tax went into tax exile in Monaco".

The appeal judge said the settlement had been made by a judge using his discretion and who had criticised the "unsatisfactory way" the husband and his financial adviser had fulfilled their obligations to make a full and clear disclosure of their financial circumstances.

Lord Justice Thorpe said an appeal would have no chance of success and refused permission.

Rodney Hylton-Potts, Mr Edwards's London lawyer, declined to comment about his client.

Mr Edwards began his racing career in a Ford Anglia and progressed through Formula 3, sportscar racing and Formula 5000.

In 1974 he found the money to buy himself the second seat with Graham Hill's Embassy Racing team, but after seven races was involved in an accident and lost his F1 place. In 1976, with backing from Penthouse and Rizla, he joined the Hesketh racing team.

He hit the big time after 1985 when he began working as a freelance sponsor hunter after landing a major Silk Cut deal for Tom Walkinshaw's Jaguar sportscar team for 1986-91.

He was still involved in motor racing teams until the middle of 1994.

Note who the financial adviser was...

AlesiUK, I am a friend of Niko Palhares and I had a beer with him last Saturday, 1/28. He is alive and well. Actually, he gave me one of his helmets, since I am the guy who drew it. Unfortunately, his elder brother, Manoel, who was also a very fine kart racer, passed away a few years ago.

Modern Motor - August 1960 (Australia)

Jim AIN'T Jim!

There's an odd sidelight to Rathmanns first name.

His 25-year-old wife, Kay, cals him Jim; his drivers licence is issued to Jim Rathmann; and his speedshop is owned by Jim Rahmann, Incorporated. But his real name is Richard.

To make things more confusing, he has a Brother named Richard, who raced against him at Indianapolis this year but didn't finish. And the brothers real name is James!

The two swapped christian names years ago, when the future Indianapolis winner borrowed his older brothers licence to qualify for a hot rod race. He took home the trophy and a new name - Jim. With fraternal loyalty, the real Jim became Dick.

Rathmann has had his share of accidents. Last June he broke his back in a spectacular pile-up during a practice run for a minor race. Doctors told him to avoid the track for a while. But he was back at the wheel two months later - to suffer concussion in Illinois when his brakes failed and his car flipped 12 times.

After the Indi victory, while one official painted the tradional number 1 on Rathmanns racer, another drove up the cream coloured convertible pace car - one of the "perk" prizes.

Fans started climbing over it to get at "Jim" for autographs.

"Careful, there," he shouted "Don't scratch the paint!"

He'd earned the prizes the hard way, and he wasn't going to have them knocked about!

J-C,
believe you me, you're not the only one tired when I read this thread and This thread - the newer thread on the same subject. There are days I wish I hadn't bothered

 ;)

Then again, there are days like today, when Ancestry publish immigration passenger lists, and I solve Steve Hostetler's mystery and the above. :D
