This may be more of a technical question, but I noticed at the USGP this past weekend that Button's head is significantly higher in the car when he's in it.

I realize that he's one of the tallest current drivers in the lineup, at 1.82 m., but from my view, it seemed that his head was so much higher out of the cockpit that it might even be considered unsafe.

I found this picture where you can compare Fisichella and Button in the cockpit. It's not the best, but I think you can see a noticeable difference.

I'm wondering if this simply comes down to the relative height of his upper body / torso. You'd think they could lower the seat a tad to make up for it.

In this particular picture, it looks as if Fisichella is also higher than the average driver, so maybe it's just the Benneton setup that causes this. You'd think for aero reasons they'd want Button deeper in the cockpit? Maybe?

I too noticed that Button sits quite a bit higher in the cockpit than Fisi. I'm sure it has to do with his height... Button is pretty tall while Fisi is really short.

No one sits as low in the car as F. Alonso though. I have no idea how he can see over the steering wheel.

Christ, what a difference! DC is as tall as Button, but still he doesn't appear to be standing in the cockpit!

According to the Atlas F1 Driver Bios, Coulthard and Button are the same height -- 1.82 meters. What does that translate to in feet and inches?

How tall is Justin Wilson? I heard his height might be a problem with the Formula 1 cars and the airflow.

I think the position drivers sit in the cockpit is also a matter of personal preference. Murray and Martin were discussing this at Hockenheim, with regards to Jenson as well. Martin says he might just like being able to see more of the nose or something. He also commented on Jos at another race and how low he sits - he reckons this would be a disadvantage when trying to find the apex on an extremely wide circuit like Malaysia.

Just curious, does anyone have a listing of drivers heights and weights in feet, inches.. pounds?

just curious. I'm too lazy to do the conversions, so if someone has the numbers somewhere, id love to know. If its a hassle, forget about it

There was a profile of Justin Wilson in the August issue of Formula 1 magazine. It said he was 6'3". Wilson's comments about height:

"A lot of people tend to disregard you before you get close to the car. Getting past that stage is the hardest part. I've driven many different types of cars and my height has not been a problem. The biggest thing is the seat fitting, but once I'm comfy it's not a problem. I don't see that I've got a disadvantage compared to short people. Obviously being taller I weigh a bit more and the weight limit is quite low in F3000, but that affects many of the shorter drivers who weigh similar amounts."
