I found myself using the controller on to Play F1 2001, but I feel that using the D-pad or Analog stick doesn't make the game as fulfilling as it could be. The cars are nothing but being twitched, the pressure sensitive buttons on the PS2 controller aren't like they were in GT3, F1 2001 it feels like Full throttle or nothing. So to anyone that has a wheel for F1 2001, does the wheel satisfy you? tell me if it feels too sensitive or dull. The 3 official steering wheels are below. Which one would be the more preferable of them?

From the Official F1 2001 site
F1 2001 supports 3 USB steering wheels. These are the Thrustmaster Ferrari FFB wheel, Logitech Driving Force wheel and the Logitech GT Force wheel (aka the Gran Turismo 3 wheel).
Steering wheels that support the DUALSHOCK standard will not work with F1 2001. Steering Wheels that support the DUALSHOCK 2 standard should work with F1 2001 however the game only officially supports the 3 USB wheels mentioned above.

Thanks a lot

StickShift,

As soon as you get any feedback, please let us know. You are exactly right about the analog buttons (either full throttle or nothing). Using the analog controller is okay for "Normal" mode, but in simulation I believe the wheel would work a lot better.

I have the "Gran Turismo" wheel. It's great with this game, very satisfied to anwser your question. Be sure to calibrate before running a race or it is WAY sensitive.

Good Luck

Loxley,

Thanks.. Where do you get them, and how much is it?

PS: Is calibrating difficult?

I tried the Fanatec Speedster 2 wheel for a couple of hours at my friends place and have to say that it's really very good.
The used materials are heavy duty stuff and allow for some precision driving. The aluminium gear stick is well crafted.

The wheel is also officially endorsed by Sony for PS1 and PS2. See some pics under www.fanatec.de. It costs about DM 160, so about $ 70.

I take it you live in the US, so EB, Babbages, Funcoland etc. It's the wheel with the Blue grips. Mine was 99.99 and came with a surround sound setup.

Calibrating is pretty easy. The game tells you turn left, right, press both pedals and Voila - calibrated.

Sony's game does not have the ability to calibrate the wheel so you end up with the wheel turned to the left or right for the car to go straight. I can't believe Sony left that out - In case you can't tell I'm a little peeved about that.

BTW, The wheel greatly increased the game experience with GT3. Totally changed racing lines, setups - everything

from my experices with GT3, the wheel is great. the level of force feedback varies greatly between different types of cars and the situation the car gets into. it varies greatly between say a Honda Civic and the Corvette C5R. feedback comes on fast and strong with the Corvette whereas the Honda is slower and more gentle. i can actually feel the high grip of more powerfull race cars. i also found the wheel especialy fun when driving rally courses. dirt, gravel, asphalt all feels different and realistic. when the car goes from one type of surface to another, the change is felt immediatly. it amazed me the first time i used it. i don't know how much this has to do with the game's programming, but whatever it is the wheel translated it well.

2 very minor "complains" about the wheel. the steering lock is just 90 degrees to the left and right, 180 total. i wish there is a little more. the other is the pedal, i'd be great if logitech can add a little more weight to the pedal assembly and pedal feel. these are just personal preferences anyway. Overall the wheel was a good buy for me.

remember the suggestion from Loxley to calibrate the wheel EACH time you play the game.

i am in the US, California to be exact. Purchased the wheel at Target for $99. A free set of speakers with sub came with it, they are a bit cheap, but I think they are worth some money on eBay.

Loxley, thanks for the info re Sony's F1 game especially the lack of calibration, I am buying EA's for sure!

I just bought the Logitech Driving Force wheel yesterday. I do like it, although I still have to get used to it. The good thing is that after 30 minutes of playing I'm less than a second off my analog controller pace. I prefer using the wheel without the pedals, however, but that could change later on.

Anyone else got any opinions on wheels? I've just got PS2 packaged with Sony F1 2001. I'm really keen to set up the system with the best driving feel possible. So far it sounds like the GT3 Force is the one to have, but I'm unsure of the options and whether anyone has actually compared the different wheels.

Is the GT3 Force wheel the only one with force feedback? If there are others with force feedback, are they as good or better?

Is the force feedback on these wheels just glorified vibration or is it actually good feedback of the car's attitude?

Bex37,

I have to say that I'm very impressed with the Logitech Driving Force wheel (it's the latest version of the GT3). You can feel when the car understeers through a corner, when you are bumped from behind, ride the curbs, etc.

I was skeptical at first because I had one before (another type of wheel) and the quality wasn't that great. However, this one is very nice. My only concern with your game is that I don't think it's compatible with it (i.e. sony 989 - according to Loxley's report).

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip.

I'm starting to think that I might have to buy the EA Sports F1 2001.

OK gang,
I just bought a hand held wheel from a company called Radica - Gamester. I saw this thing for weeks (at Babbages's) before I thought about it as a reality. Well I got it home and the damn thing works very well. You still use the (X) button to acelerate but, you turn using the other side of the of the wheel. It turns just like a real steering wheel. I used it on GT3 and had to re-learn some driving skills (because of opposite lock) but, I liked the wheel. I haven't used it yet on EA's F1 game yet but, that's just a matter of time.
