Why doesn't someone just start a "who is the best driver with the initials MS?" thread? There would be the same number of people with so little respect for logic that they would give any other answer.

Greatest driver considering results at Benetton? or greatest driver considering career results, and at one point he drove for benetton?

Either way i gather in both cases we'll get the same answer

Schumacher has to be considered the best Benetton driver ever, not at least as he is in some ways still driving with his old team.

Piquet was a great Brabham driver and then Williams driver, he was not a great Benetton driver.

Wins 19/27 = 70%
Poles 10/15 = 66.7%
Fastest Laps 23/36 = 63.9%

Benetton WDCs 2/2 = 100%
Benetton WCCs 1/1 = 100%

Career WDCs:
Piquet 3 w/ Brabham(2) and Williams
Schumacher 4 w/ Benetton(2) and Ferrari (2)

Schumacher is also #1 in career wins for a GP driver, #2 for pole positions, #1 for fastest laps, and equal #2 for career WDCs. Hmm. I wonder who the best of the 17 Benetton drivers could have been?

Maybe so, but he has the 2nd most wins after Schumacher for Benetton (3), and had given them in 1990 their highest placing in the driver's table (3rd) that was equaled and surpassed by only Schumacher. Paired with Nannini they also combined to amass Benetton's best points total ever (with 71), that has only been eclipsed again by Schumacher's period with the team. This still stands.

MH. Of course, he only tested the thing. Still, he was the greatest driver to have sit in the cockpit. Hmmm... didn't Benny buy Toleman? In that case, in a way, the greatest was AS.

While I don't disagree with the conclusion that MS was the best driver Benetton had, I don't agree with your percentages. He started in 1991 after one race with Jordan, and did 68 races in total. In His first complete season he had a poke and a win. Was impressive.

He didn't get a poke until 1992? He would have been 23 that season. That is a long time to wait. The chin must really have been a handicap.

If you meant a pole position, I disagree. The active suspension equipped Williams-Renaults racked up the pole positions in '92 and '93. Schumacher didn't record any until 1994.

The numbers given are Schumacher's percentages of the team's totals. For example, Michael recorded 19 of Benetton's 27 wins. The others were won by Piquet(3), Berger(2 - Benetton's first and last), Herbert(2), and Nannini(1).

My vote goed to Piquet. His contract, 'low' (everything is relative!)base salary, high bonus per scored point, really payed of with three wins! Made me cheer for him again like in the early eighties!

I think that explains it perfectly.

Only one driver could possibly be the greatest benetton driver. The one who brought them ALL of their success. It isnt about whether schumacher is better than piquet, it is about who was the great benetton driver. And THAT children is not even in doubt.

Alessandro Nannini, though that's just a personal feeling, his F1 career being cut short by an horrendous helicopter crash.

nannini COULD have been a truly great driver, but never got the chance to prove it. I was gutted totally when he had that accident, as he was a personal favourite.

Yes i know MS has been the most sucessful but Fisi had to have my vote cos i still believe he has sooo much potential, without having the team moulded around him or one of the better cars in the feild!

it has to be a purely rhetorical question... ;)

Next up Berger, Piquet, Alesi, Fisichella and Fabi.

At present 21% of the votes don't think it's MS. I wonder if this is a true indication of the % of people on this forum that are in denial?
