Wouldn't it be neat if such stuff could happen these days?

Bobbo- wouldn't it be more spectacular to see the parallel race Black Jack once did?;) Qualifying for both events took some trans-Atlantic flying...

Graham Hill is reported to have said:
It is a pity Jimmy was not here,
He could have seen ME... Winning the Monaco Grand Prix!!

I was there and despite my unending admiration for Jim Clark, I must say I agree with Graham.
His performance that day lifted him to a higher level than he had ever achieved before, or indeed ever reached again, IMHO.
But what a prospect Clark vs Hill would have been on that cloudy cool day in May.

The race of Graham was great. On lap 25 he was on the lead when the chicane was blocked by the Brabham Climax of Bob Anderson. Graham had to break in catastrophe and to go to the escape route. He immediately got out his stationary BRM in order to heave it back to the track. After this athletic incident he was back in fifth position overpassing by Stewart, Surtees, Bandini and Brabham.
During the rest of the race, Hill was driving as if possessed, lapping 2 seconds per lap faster tha anyone else. Brabham's engine expired on lap 42. Stewart spun at Sainte-Devote on oil. The 2 Ferraris were still on the lead but not for a long time. Hill was catching Surtees on lap 53 and Bandini on lap 65. Graham finished the 100-lap races (314.5 km) 1 minute and 4 seconds ahead of Bandini.

A wonderful drive by Graham, but a really crushing victory by Jimmy. Didn't he set an Indy record for the number of laps led?

Jim Clark is probably the only one to ever come so close to Billy Arnold's record of laps in the lead in one Indy 500. But he didn't beat (and it is very unlikely anyone will ever beat) Arnold's record. Billy Arnold led 198 (!!!) of the 200 laps in his 1930 victory, Jimmy Clark 190 in 65.

That year Pedro RodrÃguez was supposed to sub for Jimmy at Monaco but the Lotus team got into a fight with the organizers about prize/Starting money and they didn't attend. Pedro was very disappointed to say the least.
