I was just wondering, is there any possibility/benefit in putting periscope exhausts on road cars?
Just stupid little question.

I though the only reason there are periscope exhausts is that it takes away the hot air from above the diffuser and hence cleans up the air even more.
Also allowing warm air under the rear wing should create more downforce due to lower pressure I think.

Periscopes on road cars, may be not..!
Why not..? well how about....
*The exhausts would have to route inside the boot (trunk) taking up luggage space
*Higher centre of gravity
*Rain falling down the open end pipe and making the insides rusty
*Pedestrians burning their hands as they pass behind you
*Absolutely no benefits but F1 boy racer looks

Some Toyota Land Cruisers and Land Rovers have had periscope exhausts for ages, although for different purposes than those of F1 cars (i.e. to prevent water getting into the pipe and blocking the flow of gasses). Also, some diesel busses and trucks have them that way to prevent air pollution at walking people's breathing height.

Well I know absolutely nothing about cars so I wouldn't have a clue about the technicalities involved. Althouhg I guess it does sound pretty stupid now!

Sorry, the Suzuka GP report has been put on temporary hold, there wasnt enough new stuff to get me rushing out to complete it. Only Ferraris new chassis (not much to see..) and Williams permanent use of Periscopes.' Try F1mech.com or Roughwoods excellent reviews or the technical pages on Ferrariworld.com.
The reason for it I have a lot of other technical projects on the go, some of which, like a car by car season review might be seen before the end of the year. Others are in preparation for the 2002 season.
Next year I going to be able to get even more direct access to the teams; the cars, designer and factories, more exclusive professional technical photography, more one off articles published either on the web or magazines.
Keep yours eyes open.....

Everyone that lives in the Los Angeles basin ought to happier now that buses and a lot more trucks have high level exhaust pipes. We now don't have as much stinking diesel smoke and sulphur in our air intakes for the air conditioning and heating.
