At last a news that woke up my F1 interest (which went quite a bit down since after-Spa)

Belgian David Saelens was a delighted man after driving a Formula One car for the first time during the recent European Minardi day.

Saelens, who was involved with Minardi's junior team in Formula 3000, tested at Misano, near Rimini, and was delighted with the experience.

"Like any racing driver, the ultimate goal for me is Formula One," said Saelens. "I had been told there might be the chance to try the Formula One car this season, and the opportunity arose here at Misano. It turned out to be everything I had imagined.

"The power, the handling and the braking are just incredible. It was a great experience, and once you have had a taste of it, you cannot help but want more."

Minardi team boss Paul Stoddart was impressed with Saelens and admitted that his performance means he is likely to be involved in the team's extensive winter testing programme. Stoddart said: "David put on a good show for all the European Minardi fans who were present at Misano and turned in a very solid performance.

"He obviously relished the opportunity of getting behind the wheel of the F1 car and was turning quick, consistent laps almost immediately.

"As we have already disclosed, European Minardi F1 will be conducting an extensive pre-season test programme, beginning early in January 2002, and using a number of drivers. David has clearly demonstrated that he is capable of assisting us with this very important work."

That's really really really great news! At last! That would boost my interest in F1...A Belgian F1 driver!

...and Schumy, Montoya and the others should start to be worried ;);) :p (I'm joking BTW...)

So he'll be test driver and who knows maybe full time driver? Who knows, uh? After all Minardi is used to change driver during season or announce them late.

Belgian F1 history isn't that bad for a such small country where motorsport has no sponsors/gov support.

Jacky Ickx (drove for Ferrari) and Thierry Boutsen (drove for Williams and beat once Senna!!!!) are the most famous ones...

(but were there other belgian pilots??? )

That might arouse some major support for Minardi in Belgum...

Imagine going to Spa and seeing the place kitted out in Minardi Flags…..Now that would be a sight worth seeing:D :D :D

Saelens is a very fast driver but prone to mistakes. I think he will surprise many people. I hope he gets the first seat in Minardi.

Ah, ha: the Keke Rosberg Organisation's attempt to dominate F1 continues. David Saelens is managed (if my memory serves me correctly) by Didier Coton who is Keke's (extremely well-respected) partner. You can't miss Didier: glasses, Hugo Boss jacket and usually two inches from Mika at all times!

Should be a good move - especially with the weight of the KRO behind him. David Saelens is the guy who got hurt at Silverstone during Qualifying earlier this year - I saw it happen. He lost control just past Copse and bounced into the Gravel Trap. It wasn't a big accident (and no flipping) but it took the medics the best part of 30 minutes to extract him from his car. His other claim to fame is that he has a habit of colliding with his F3000 teammate - which is not something to be repeated if he makes it to F1.

He's a long term F3000 guy.

I think it unlikely he'd get the drive for the simple reason that it's taken them till now to give him a run but they've been running his F3k teammate all year as well as another ex-European Minardi(then arrows) F3000 guy.

Yeah it happened in Spa, I saw it, few meters from that. Also saw Saelens running to his teammate (Piccini or something) and saying all the good he thuoght of him :)

Piccini was in fault at this time, he directly admitted it...And so Paul supported the Belgian driver who brought some points to the F3000 European team (and he didn't drive the full season still he managed to bring more points than his teammate)!)

Of course, David Saelens is not clean of mistakes but who is?
