I thought Marlboro sold its sponsorship to a huge Telecom. What is the specifics on that? Will Marlboro name still be on the car? You would think Malboro is getting tired of seeing its name blocked out on the red beauties in more and more races, thus making its sponsorship a waste of money.

I think due to the introduction of the ban on tobacco advertising as from 2006 more and more teams trying to shift sponsorship from tobacco companies to other 'investors'. Teams like Williams, Jag, Arrows, Minardi, Toyota etc. are aready tobacco 'free' and the remaining teams have to seek alternatives. Telecom seems to be a good alternative and Ferrari is certainly taking a first step into this direction by starting to distribute the financial resources between Marlboro and Vodafone.

I've read in the recent news stories that R Dennis has already secured his budget for the next years to a high percentage. Any hints as to who will 'replace' West in future? What about Jordan and Renault?

It is an official announcement. As of 2003 (maybe 2004, i dunno) with all the tobacco bans, Ferrari's main sponser will be Vodafone.

In any case I think it's smart to think about that now for every team. If the car manufacturers(sp?) establish their own series soon, it's better to swap to a non tabocco sponsor now rather than in 2005, before they are taken away for other series and teams.

wonder what a "coca cola" red ferrari would look like

:  (where's the :throw up: smiley;) )

...

Vodafone's brand will appear on the cars' sidepods, nose and front wing as well as on the drivers' overalls and helmets.

At least the Vodafone red (and white) is suitable for the Ferrari! There could be a clash if they were to go joint sponsors with Coca-cola!

Actually, looking at the two colours on the respective company web sites, I think the Coca-cola one is nicer as it is a deeper red - isn't this more like the original Ferrari red (assuming the current red is actually Marlboro's).

I sincerely hope Ferrari will return to Ferrari-red and ditch the Marlboro-red they introduced in 1997.

Ferrai are wise to move into the non-tobacco sposnsorhip arena, given that they will have to eventually anyway - Look at Williams - They are making a go of it with nary a coffin nail manufacturer in sight! It is possible...

I still think it is a silly rule... are cigarettes illegal? No. Therefore why should it be illegal to advertise them? Governments are big on wanting to look pro-active when it comes to curbing smoking, but are more addicted to the $$$$ that ciggies bring in than smokers are to the weed itself...

More serious,

I do think that those mobile phone providers can do more in formula 1. But where are the major food chains?
