I know most, if not all street cars use helical gears for the transmission except for reverse. What kind of gears do race cars use? I'm guessing straight cut since they are probably a bit stronger.

Straight-cut gears vs. helical gears?

They are indeed using straight cut gears in order to avoid the excessive friction of the axial loads generated by helical gears.
There is much more about the design of these gears. Anybody with involute gear design knowledge?

Involutes themselves are fairly easy to design. The art is the little tweaks like addendum mods.
It's one subject where there's a lot of info out there. I found www.bostongear.com pretty good.

Hey guys,
my first ever post! Feel honoured....
Just wanted to say another reason fro straight cut gears is that all the torque is transferred directly into te mating gear. Helical mesh better but lose out so of the torque.
