Hey Barry, I've found this picture in a French encyclopedia called "Alpha Auto" :

Luc, this is a very interesting photo because it has appeared in several places at different times.

I first saw it on the back of one part of a British-produced encyclopaedia of motoring called 'On Four Wheels' way back in about 1975.

Several people have alerted me to it since then in various different places.

I suspect the true copyright belongs to someone other than Attualfoto; still it is a very nice view, showing off the aerodynamics of the car quite well. I have always thought that it was probably one of the slipperiest cars racing that year.

Note the little aluminium extension to the radiator air extractor vents - required in Austria because it was SO HOT!

I first saw that photo 5 years ago, and it was the first photo I'd ever seen of the Connew, and I always thought it was a nice looking car...especially with that colour scheme.

What exactly was 'Capricorn'?

A frozen sea-food company, based, I believe, somewhere in the Abridge area of Essex.

I believe they were eventually absorbed into the Ross group of companies. Personally, I never met anyone connected with the company and the finance they 'injected' into the team was enough to cover the cost of painting their name and logos on the car! Or so the story goes.

Being in the Sparkford area today, I paid my first-ever visit to the Haynes Museum. That DFV looks awful lonely sitting in the corner. Although it doesn't look as sad as Lola T370/HU4, which is badly in need of some TLC. :(

I just came across this:

Never seen that before :)

It's available to buy for a whopping £2.00 from http://www.simonlewis.com/

Plus this!

CONNEW CHEVROLET F5000 Trimmer at speed 1974 Brands f5000 smoking badly 6x4 col pro £2.00

I feel like buying them  £4 for two 6x4 images is pretty good, I'd say.

There's also a picture of the Connew signed by Migault on eBay right now:

I'd say anyone who's interested should download that pic before it goes off eBay...

But it seems also to show some severe torsional rigidity problems. Or am I wrong?

I hope someone from Atlas would buy it, really...I know it's £8.00 or so, but I could see it having some kind of value (sentimental value at least)...it may be the only print of that photo available to the public, at least, in the year 2005 anyway...:)

When I was looking for the article in Motor Sport in 1986 about the Climax 'Godiva', I found another article, in the August 1986 issue, about the Connew......featuring this photo of the car being pushed away at the Nurburgring................(copyright LAT)

Posted Image

but that bloke behind the car doesn't appear to be wearing shorts, so I think he may be an imposter...................... :p

IIRC this picture was wrongly captioned. It is Peter in the car and Roger Doran and some other bloke pushing.

I have just come across this.... It is the original photo of the car, taken on the forecourt of a filling station on the High Road, Chadwell Heath the very evening that the car was put on the ground, on wheels for the first time.

The engine is a dummy, as is the gearbox and there are various other artificial bits to connect things together, but it was pushable, so this is where we pushed it in order to find sufficient light to take the 'historic' photo.

I may have posted this on another thread, years ago, but for newcomers, it might be something they haven't seen.

What a fantastic vehicle TNF really is.... last night at the Norther Chapter gathering outside Chester, I met Adam F. for the first time.

Adam handed me a small pile of Connew-related memorabilia to look at.

Amongst the sheets of paper was a letter written on Connew team paper, by me, to Adam (who presumably was a very young man at the time) dated 19th September 1972! What a small world we live in.

Another item in Adam's collection is this picture....

Posted Image
...which has me baffled because I cannot remember it being taken or indeed, ever having seen it before. I have asked Mr. C himself to see if he can place it.

I must say I think the car looked far better without the yellow....

It may look complete, Ray, but I have realised that the photo was taken at the same time as the other 'Library Car Park' pictures shown on this page...

http://62.149.36.46/...-bin/connew.htm

BUT, it has no innards in the engine or gearbox, no dampers, no oil tank, no mirrors, no battery, no fire extinguisher..... and if my memory doesn't fail me, no money either!

The drawing is very good. Interestingly, the aluminium rear suspension top cross member shown was a very early one and was replaced by a more conventional system quite early in the car's life.

Here is a view of that early cross member, looking at the the underside of it, with its bottom surface removed.

Posted Image

It was beautifully constructed, mainly by Peter IIRC, but he decided to replace it with steel tubing in the end.

Barry...To me as a draftsman...this is a very complex construction. And if I just knew the dimentions...I´d love to draw it. In both 2D and 3D.
Best: Staffan.

No, Twinny, it must have been Thursday.

The race was Saturday and we only practised on the first day.

All Friday was spent rebuilding the rear corners where the springs had let us down (literally!) and Friday night too.

What happened on Saturday morning is part of the whole sorry saga!

Ah, ok. I still forget when the Brands and Silverstone races were held - except for the fact that one was Saturday, and the other Sunday!

Clearly I got it backwards. Again... :)

Thanks too, Antony. I think we know the Austria picture but the Purley side view is certainly new to me.

Paddock Bend on the Saturday, Barry? Definitely not on raceday, which may as well have been night time...

I'm sure the x marks the row of lockups, one of which was the official Connew "works". This is the High Rd in Chadwell Heath. The second pic, gathered a year or so ago, is probably clearer.

I see Autosport ran two pictures of the Connew this week (in the DFV 40th anniversary feature) - well, strictly speaking, one pic, twice, and one of them should have been a pic of the McGuire BM1.

Still, what do you expect from a mag that also had Moss winning at Monaco in '61 in a Cooper?

Looks like it's taken from the inside of Druids Barry, no.34 on the car, one I've never seen before. Only a small photo.

This is the picture Autosport used.

Posted Image

It's not a new picture. It first appeared in Motoring News in 1972 and I think Francois is just turning into Paddock, not Druids. I guess it comes from their archives, or indeed, whoever now owns them.

We still cannot explain why the airbox is missing.

I cannot think that there can be objections to this picture being shown - it is in thousands of Motoring News gathering dust in attics around Britain.

If anyone objects, I'll scrap it.
