Just wondering if anyone has SCCA's National schedule for the years 1953, 1955, and 1956. I am having a hard time figuring out what races were regional and what ones were national that Masten Gregory competed in during those years. I am trying to sort this info out for the "Race Successes Table" I have created for his biography. Thanks in advance.

Also, was the California Sports Car Club apart of SCCA during this time?

The California Sports Car Club and the SCCA were separate clubs at the time of Masten's club racing career. They did not merge until the 1960s. The SCCA's sphere of influence was National and included Northern California. The Cal Club held sway in Southern California only. From the mid-fifties, there were a few incursions into each other's territory, but they were, generally, not successful. However, the SCCA did sanction some Santa Barbara races and the Cal Club did sanction at least one Laguna Seca race. The Cal Club was the only real challenge to SCCA hegemony in big-time road race governance, even though they were limited to a small, if very important, geographical area of the US. Both NASCAR and AAA tried to break into road racing without achieving much. You should find someone in KC with a collection of the SCCA magazine, Sports Car. There you will find the calendar that specifies which races were nationals and which were regionals. The calendar is not complete, but it will solve 90% of your inquiries. The race reports will also add to your Gregory results.

I can't find any reference in Martin's records to which races were SCCA Nationals, which were SCCA Regionals, and which were 'other'. Or am I being blind as well as stupid?

Joe, the 'Cal Club' was initially at least a rival to the east coast region SCCA chapters, and I don't think it came under their umbrella as early as the mid 50s (if ever).

Martin's results are interesting but have nothing to do with the "national' vs "regional" nomenclature in SCCA racing. I think he merely means these were US national races rather than international ones. Cal Club obviously didn't differentiate between "Nationals" and "regionals".

This is a topic I had hoped to leave -- and will for the most part -- for another day. One of my excuses for returning to the International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen in 2002 will be to sort some of this out to my own satisfaction. Although I have many issues of R&T, SCI, Sports Car, SCG, and various other magazines of The Day, my collection is far from complete. Besides, there are "political" factors that just add spice to the whole issue to make it even more fun.

Having said that, I agree with Michael that Martin has listed many of the "national" races of the SCCA. I have not had the opportunity to fully analyze the yearly listings that Martin has put on his site -- much of the information being provided by Karl Ludvigsen if I recall, but I just eyeballing it makes my eyes water and my head ache. As Michael correctly warns, the CSCC -- the Cal Club -- and the SCCA were scarcely friends for many years and many mistakenly stir the Cal Club events in with the SCCA races.

The eventual peace settlement twix the SCCA and the Cal Club made life a bit easier for the SCCA, but the confusion for those step into this without at least some knowledge of the rift can be significant: for instance, the Pacific Coast Championship events; when the system of the "National Championship" for the various classes started and how they were scored; that regionals and nationals were often the same weekend; and so forth and so on.

Thank goodness Michael, Bill Green, Mike Argetsinger, and others have a handle on most of this. It was often confusing at the time and the passage of time hasn't made it any easier....

Thanks for the info everyone.

I have articles on most of the races but sometimes the sanctioning body is not clear. Most of the time, Road and Track had a nice little SCCA National Event logo that accompanied the article which made it a no-brainer. I was a bit confused because the CSCC is now apart of SCCA and they are mentioned in the articles of the 1955 Palm Springs races and last running of Torrey Pines--but no mention of SCCA anywhere.

David, Cabianca...: You are correct that my so called U.S. National Races have nothing to do with which are SCCA Nationals, which SCCA Regionals or Divisionals. If I new that I would surely sort them better but at the moment I know only SCCA Nationals calendar since 1962. Such races I have labeled with SCCA National prefix. Pre 1961 I have confirmed only very little usually from VIR website. Prior to 1957 I know really nothing about which races were part of whaich championship despite I would be extremely interesting to know that.

The SCCA "Nationals" in 1953 were as follows:
MacDill AFB
Bergstrom AFB
Pebble Beach
Bridgehampton
Golden Gate
Mt. Equinox Hillclimb
Offutt AFB
Lockbourne AFB
Janesville
Seattle
Moffett NAS
Giant's Despair Hillclimb
Thompson
Reno
Sowego
March AFB

AFB = Air Force Base, NAS = Naval Air Station

However, the scoring system was still based on the "high point man", who, in 1953, was Bill Spear. The way it worked was that you scored points in National events no matter how many cars you ran in how many different classes. They were all added together. If someone was rich enough like Spear to have Ferraris in a couple of classes and an OSCA for another, it was fairly easy to pile up points vs. someone with only one car who couldn't travel a lot. The drivers were then ranked according to points and there was one "National Champion".

In 1954, the system was changed. The National races were still counted. However, there were National Championships in 15 Classes. Points were accumulated in the National races, of which there were between 15 and 20. The classes basically followed International convention.
They were broken into production and modified, the latter being primarily purpose-built sports racers.

The classes were:

B (5000cc to 8000cc), C (3000cc to 5000cc), D (2000cc to 3000cc), E (1500cc to 2000cc), F (1100cc to 1500cc), G (750cc to 1100cc), H (up to 750cc), Formula III and Unrestricted (Run what'cha brung).

Modified cars had classes B, C, D, E, F, G, H,
Production cars had C, D, E, F

In later years these classes increased in numbers. Later the SCCA switched from displacement based classes in production to performance based classes which tried to group cars of like performance together, no matter what their displacement. No matter which system was used, one car usually reigned as the hot set up in production racing until it was displaced by another.

The National Points Standings for 1954 are in the March/April 1955 issue of Sports Car, pages 26 thru 29, with NC's for Formula III and "Unrestricted" as well.

It'll take a bit of work, but when I get a chance I will certainly post at least the top few in each category. I must mention that I had almost forgotten that I had this information...

I understand the distinction between Nationals and Regionals after 1964 (when the Run-Offs started) but it seems to have been different before that date. The table below came from Venlo Wolfson's 1967 Road Racing Annual. Immediately above the table he says:

The Club's speed events include "Nationals" for top drivers holding National licenses and "Regionals", primarily local events for club members. Hill climbs and drivers' schools are normally held separately from Regional meets but are on the same competitive level.

At the top of the SCCA's competition scale are the three professional series - U.S. Road Racing Championship, Canadian-American Challenge, and Trans-American Championship - and the FIA-listed National/Opens and Internationals.

SCCA-sanctioned events* 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966

Hill climbs 15	12	10 6 6

Drivers' schools 53	53	66	64	66

Regionals & Restricteds 70	90	97 120 120

Divisionals 39	44	51 - -

Nationals 13	10	11	52	58

Interdivisional - - 1 1 1

National/opens 3	11	12	11	14

Internationals 5 6 6 7 9

 --- --- --- --- ---

 198 226 254 261 274
* An "event" is a weekend of racing and usually includes many races.

It is clear that the system changed following the 1964 Run-Offs with the old Divisionals being replaced by an increased number of Nationals and Regionals - the system most of us will recognise.

So what are these "National/opens"? The increase in number in 1963 seems to tie in with the start of the USRRC and the number of events in 1966 roughly ties in with the 8 USRRC events plus 7 Trans-Ams (the Sebring Trans-Am may have been counted in with the next day's International). The Internationals appear to be the 6 Can-Am races plus, maybe, Sebring, the July Watkins Glen and Kent in October.

Which leaves me wondering what David's list represents. His 1962 list is about the right length but his 1963 and 1964 lists would appear to be well short. Maybe this is predominately the "National/open" category events that I'm still finding a puzzle.

So I dug out my 1964 Road & Track and looked for SCCA Nationals in their "Time & Place" calendar. I don't have anything earlier that the June edition so this is only good from the 17 May weekend onwards:

1964
17 May - Cumberland, Md
31 May - Bridgehampton, NY
14 Jun - Mid-Ohio, Ohio
21 Jun - Elkhart Lake, Wis
5 Jul - Lake Garnett, Kansas
19 Jul - Greenwood, Ohio
2 Aug - Lynndale Farms, Wis
(NB 16 Aug - SCCA Natl Open Touring Car Races, Marlboro, Md)
23 Aug - Watkins Glen, NY
6 Sep - Thompson, CT
17 Oct - Lime Rock, Conn

That's 10, suggesting I missed one from before 17 May. David agrees with Cumberland, Bridgehampton, Elkhart Lake, Watkins Glen and Lime Rock (except on the date). It's also possible that events such as Lynndale Farms didn't take place and there are two pre-May events missing: such as David's Marlboro and VIR events. It's interesting that so many of these events are east of the Mississippi.

I looked at the 1965 SCCA Nationals and they were scheduled at the rate of two or three each weekend. I guess that post-65 Nationals don't really have the same level of importance - maybe the equivalent of club racing in the UK.

Am I putting this together right?

Afraid I can't help much
My sources include pre-season published dates, but a lot of extracts from driver biogs along the lines of "on such and such a date he won the SCCA National at Wherever". These could easily be misrepresentations of Regionals or those new woodpile inhabitants, Divisionals
I'm surprised no-one can produce definitive lists for each year :

David

It is odd, especially as Road & Track lists them in its calendar. I just found this in Sports Car Graphic March 1963:

1963 SCCA Nationals schedule
5-7 Apr - Marlboro
26-28 Apr - VIR
10-12 May - Cumberland
1-2 Jun - Bridgehampton
22-23 Jun - Road America (Elkhart Lake)
6-7 Jul - Lake Garnett
3-4 Aug - Meadowdale
23-24 Aug - Watkins Glen
31 Aug-1 Sep - Thompson

This is one short of the table from the 1967 Annual, so I guess one more got scheduled later.

Also listed are 31 Divisional Championship events, some way short of the 44 in the 1967 Annual.

A schedule of FIA events in the same issue lists two International IC/F1/FJ events (up to 31 Jul): Bossier City on 31 March and IRP on 27-28 Jul. I think this is something we have discussed somewhere before ...

The other thing I find odd is that all the SCCA Nationals are towards the East, nearly all in the North Eastern Division and Central Division, with only Divisional Championship events in the other Divisions. There must have been something of equivalent importance in the West prior to the USRRC - any idea what it was? Was the Pacific Coast Championship the equivalent?

I'm reluctant to express views on this subject here, where there are many who know more about these things that I do.
However, it is obvious that there would be more (and better) racing in the areas where the sport was the strongest, eg in the NE and on the Pacific Coast.
The point must also be made that the SCCA Championship was never contested by the same people from race to race in the manner of - to give an extreme example - present-day championships. In the first few years of the Championship, a handful of NE drivers raced in occasional west coast events, but there was comparatively little traffic the other way.
My contention is that, as time passed, the east coast regions were more enthusiastic about applying for National (ie, championship) dates than those from other parts of the US.

A variation on the 1964 schedule, adding Sports Car Graphic's 1964 International Calendar from the Jan 1964 edition (pp8, 17).

1964
12 Apr - Marlboro, Md (from SCG Jan 1964 p8 schedule)
19 Apr - Virginia Int'l Raceways (from SCG Jan 1964 p8 schedule)
17 May - Cumberland, Md
24 or 31 May - Bridgehampton, NY (SCG says 24 May)
14 Jun - Mid-Ohio, Ohio
21 Jun - Elkhart Lake, Wis
5 Jul - Lake Garnett, Kansas
19 Jul - Greenwood, Ohio (not shown in SCG)
2 Aug - Lynndale Farms, Wis (not shown in SCG)
23 Aug - Watkins Glen, NY
6 Sep - Thompson, CT
11 Oct - Reading, Pa (from SCG Jan 1964 p8 schedule)
17 or 18 Oct - Lime Rock, Conn (SCG says 18 Oct)

So Marlboro, VIR, Cumberland, Bridgehampton, Mid-Ohio, Elkhart Lake, Lake Garnett, Watkins Glen, Thompson, Reading and Lime Rock gives us 11. The 1967 table said there were 11. Could this be the right list at last?

With the exception of Kansas, in the Central Division, all these are in either the North East or Mid West SCCA Divisions.

Here are the national points for 1954. I hope this is useful to some of you. I will find some time to work on a better -- or at least more detailed list of "Nationals" and national events; Michael Lynch has done considerable work in this area and if you haven't picked up a copy of Sports Car Racing in the '50s, you really need to do so. It is a great book and Michael could use the royalties....

Speaking for myself, my reaction is similar to Michael's. I just love finding, buried down the list, names that would be famous later on: Gus Andrey in a TR2 (must have been before he discovered Morgans), Kjell Qvale in an MG Special etc. Of particular fascination to me, with my special interest in New Zealand racing, is the name of Allard driver Fred Lossee. He later raced a 100S Austin-Healey under the name of Derf Eesoll (couldn't have fooled many!) and then took it to NZ and raced it there.

Very much appreciated Don and a very interesting list. I could easily absorb myself in a book with all of this data for several weeks.

What immediately caught my eye, Riddelle Gregory 9th in the C Mod points and Kansas Citian Art Bunker the F Production Champion.

Joe:
I know you made the point in an earlier thread about how Masten Gregory's brother spells his first name. But it worries me that 937 different sources call him Ridelle and only one (you) Riddelle. Are you really really sure?

David,
I am absolutely sure because I don't make grandiose spelling errors like that. When I first discovered this, Riddelle commented that his name was mispelled in Michael Lynch's American Sports Car Racing book. Honest error because it was always mispelled in magazine articles as "Ridelle." Even Carroll Shelby mispells it. The source of the problem with the mispellings is that you pronounce his name RI-Dell and not RID-Dell like it is spelled. However, he still answers to RID-Dell and many people pronounce it that way too. Even I do sometimes.

OK, we'll make that two for Riddelle - you and him.
No better make it three. Me too :D

Actually "Joe" had convinced me of this some time ago, but I merely copied it as it was in the magazine.

I working on my next RVM article, but as soon as I wrap it up, I will come back here to talk about some observations I have gained from my latest look under the lid at this branch of the sport...

Has anyone any info on John Negley driving an Allard K3 or any other driver who did around 54-56

John Negley was killed in an accident while practising for the races at Turner AFB in Georgia around 24 October 1953, so discount him from driving an Allard K3 during the period 1954-56.

According to Road & Track an Allard K3 turned up at Watkins Glen in 1954 and entered the GP race. I quote " Several Allard J2X's are present and one K3 sporting two '55 Packard 4-throat carbs on a Cad engine" No drivers name is mentioned, and I have failed to spot the car described as a K3 in the programme. That means little though, as only the scantest of information was printed in the programme. Not much help I'm afraid. If you find out more about this entry - then let me know please.

Can anyone please confirm if there was a race at Eagle Mountain National Guard Base, just outside of Fort Worth, Texas, in 1953.
I can find no date for the race, but supposedly Shelby won the Guardsmen's Trophy driving an Allard J2 with Cadillac engine installed.
Any clues?

John Negley raced an Allard J2 in 1952 and got points in a regional championship that often awarded a one finishing position to the car and another to the driver.
Negley raced an Allard J2X LM during 1953 in at least nine events with a fair bit of success before his death.

I did some research on the early "Carroll Shelby" Allard J2 which actually belonged to Charles E. Brown but stopped my research before confirming that it had raced 1953 at "Eagle Mountain", said to be "Fort Worth" in the claims I saw. His first "big car" race was supposedly in the car at Caddo Mills in 1952. It is important to note that the racing at this time was strictly small-time stuff even if it didn't seem like it to all of those who were involved.

Terry,
good luck finding those scans! But if you do I hope they are not in the
PDF format, which are a pain in the arse to open! Here is a link to my
new 1961 SCCA page which is growing as we speak (just bought 10
more SCCA mags and two programs)

The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), located at Watkins Glen, has copies of the early issues of Sports Car (Sports Wagen).

Many of these early issues have photographs pasted into the issues, which should give you an idea as to the circulation numbers.....
