Can anyone shed more light on Jackies accident at Spa in '66. I have heard that a local farmer and Graham Hill came to his rescue but he was trapped in a ditch with the car filling with fuel. He aquiplained of the course and hit a pole. Hill went off roght behind him. Are these facts true and please give me more of an insight into the accident and its aftermath. Did this accident lead to Jackie's strong stance on safety
Thank You :) :smoking:

Bob Bondurant was also involved in rescuing JYS, who was trapped by his steering wheel. From then on, his car always carried a spanner to enable the wheel to be removed.

This as you say led to his safety stance.

The accident happened at the Masta Kink

Thr Belgian GP started overcast but dry, however after only a few miles the drivers were caught in heavy showers of rain. Result: mayhem! Only 7 cars (not including Phil Hill's MacLaren camera car for the movie 'Grand Prix'...) survived the first lap. I remember a pic of Bonniers Cooper hanging over some kind of abyss....

and

for Mike Lang's race report.

Stewart did a brilliant qualifying lap BTW! He managed to get a 1.9l V8 BRM on the front row in Spa. Faster than e.g. Brabham and Bandini in full 3 litre cars

Bonnier's car was hanging off the road by the house on the exit of Burnenville

Yes! :)

We've discussed it in Grand Prix threads a few times I think .... easiest way to find them is a BB search using "Sarti" as keyword.

Hmm.. wasn't that the accident where Hill went off and took the exact same course as Stewart.. Stewart hit a fencepost or something and knocked it down, but hill got through unscathed because he went exactly through the gap Stewart left behind him...

Can't remember the details though.

Well, Forix' link to the Mike Lang report -cited above- may well confirm this........

He broke his wrist late April, 68 in a Formula 2 race (practice) at Jarama outside of Madrid. Missed out driving Andy Granatelli's turbo car at Indy as a result.

Uhm. I meant that as 'Oh, that wasn't the accident...?' because it obviously wasn't. : I remember reading about an accident like that somewhere, and as I read the first post I thought this was it. Anyone remember an accident like that?

I believe that one of the problems with the '66 Spa race was that just prior to the start an announcement came over the PA that there was rain pouring at Malmedy? Only problem was that it was in French, so none of the English speaking teams for example knew what was wrong. I read this in Louis Stanley's book 'strictly off the record'
