I don't know why I didn't mention this last week sometime. Last week we had a new series start on Channel 4 called 'Salvage Squad'. It's introduced by comedian Lee Hirst, who does an OK (just about!) job. The premise is that the Salvage Squad have ten days to restore some item of machinery that has lain dormant for years. For instance, tomorrows' programme is a Centurion tank, last weeks' was a 1925 steam roller. Why am I brining it up here in TNF? Well, because one of the programmes will feature Jackie Stewart's 1969 Spanish Grand Prix-winning Matra MS80, no less!! It's been kept quiet very well, as there's been no mention of it in any of the magazines ('Classic & Sportscar', 'Motor Sport' etc), so it will be interesting to see what kind of job they do on it. I can't imagine the three of them being let loose on a race car when they have no experience in re-building one, so there has to be some sort of 'expert' on hand to help them along. I'm keen to find out who actually owns the car and for how long it's been in his barn in pieces!!
Now, it's a ten part series (an hour each), so we don't know yet when this particular programme will be screened, I'll keep you informed though!

Gary,

There was a mention in Autosport a couple of weeks ago plus a picture IIRC.

Theyve started showing these progs again on Discovery, for any of you subscribers to Satan, sorry Sky TV. I'll keep my eye out for the f5000 one. BTW can anyone remember which issue of Motor Sport dealt with the Antique Automobiles F1 story?

who else thinks non-championship F1 races are more interesting than todays debacle?

I highly recommend this one - cheeringly British military, they find that the tank not only participated in the Gulf War, it had also been in the Suez incident in 1956... Something old, something new, something rebuilt, something...khaki??? Outlasted the American Abrams though...

Having seen almost the entire series the first time, I have to say the most dissapointing episode WAS the restoration of the F5000 car. Where it was let down badly was the (very) contrived "race" held at the end of the programme. Watch out however for the episodes on the autogyro and the De Havilland Moth - both these episodes were very good.

I agree, the F5000 programme was very, very poor. I have a friend in South Africa who is desperate for me to send him a copy as he loves his F5000 cars, but I've hung back, I've told him it's crap!

On the whole I thought the series was very good. The one thing that annoyed me most about it were the artificial time limits that were self imposed eg. two weeks to get the autogyro sorted in time for a Duxford air show or two weeks to have the steam boat finished in time for a display at Lake Coniston. These limits were totally uneccessary and inserted purely to add a sense of "drama" to the proceedings. In fact, the best programme was the restoration of the Moth. In this case, no limit was imposed, mainly, I feel because, once they realised the enormity of the task they had set themselves and the fact that there was no way the CAA would grant a Certificate of Airworthiness to a "two week" restoration job, they took their time and did a brilliant job. I think the total rebuild time was around six months.

A word of warning - one series to avoid as being pure tripe - "Panic Mechanics".

Yes indeed - the use of Trevor Nelson (Radio1 DJ and MTV Base presenter) signalled to me it would probably be horseshit, and it was!!
