1966%20Aug%2028th_zpsqpgvbqyf.jpg

In my quest for details of Rochdale Olympics in competition, I came across this photo from Aug 1966 at Santa Pod.

I think this is the same Standard Vanguard after a repaint? (Rochdale Olympic 4th from the left)

They made better dirt track cars,, at least when the wheels were on the ground.

Robby Marchant late 60s,, and he is still racing. in slightly more modern equipment.003.jpg

With the car third in line, it looks more like a recreation of the 'Wacky Races' than a drag meeting.

Actually it looks right at home at a low key meeting, possibly a 'street meet' where Hot Rods used to be regular competitors.

1966 was the 1st year of drag racing at Santa Pod, 2016 is the 50th Anniversary.

The photo taken on the 28th August 1966 was the 1st annual British Drag Racing National Championship.

I'm a bit out of touch these days but isn't there a Phase 1, "Beetleback" Standard Vanguard racing in pre 60 or whatever saloons currently. Think it has appeared at Goodwood.

There are several cars raced at Goodwood that I don't recall ever being any good in period.

Like the Alvis Grey Lady? I only forgave that one because of who it had behind the wheel.

I agree, Rob, especially when you consider that GDRM was not long out of hospital after a hip operation, and relied on arm crutches when he got out of the car. The car was very well developed, and modified and the potential seemed very good, mono leaf rear springs, discs and a Healey 3000 gearbox ISTR. GDRM told me he felt it had a lot to offer. I missed the issue of Vintage Racecar in which it was tested, sadly. A scan of the article would be most welcome.

Gerry Dunham raced an Alvis in the '52/53/54 Silverstone Saloon Car Races. He finished 6th.; 3rd.; and 9th. respectively. I suspect a little less developed than the Goodwood car!

I suspect not the slowest car in its class either.
