A question in the Readers' Comments Forum about successive podium places made me wonder: did the Indy 500 -counting till 1961 for the Drivers' Championship- also count for the Constructors' Ch, that started in 1958?
Forix gives the Indy 500 as an event, but doesn't give any points to let's say Epperly or Kurtis Kraft.
Is this because they had to enter officially for the WCC? Or was the Indy race officially a non-event for the Constructors' Championship?

I never saw any Constructors Cup points table of the 1958-61 era that included Indy. Don't know the official reasons though, but one thing I'm positive about is that a constructor didn't have to officially enter the World Championship in today's ways.

David Hayhoe in his Grand Prix Data Book has this to say about the distribution of points.

1959 to 59 - 8,6,4,3,2 points awarded to the first five finishers (drivers only). Constructors were awarded points on this basis from 1958 (excluding Indianapolis). The driver setting the fastest lap in an event scored an additional point. Points were shared for joint fastest laps. Until 1957, where more than one driver shared a car, they shared the points. From 1958, points were only awarded to a driver who handled the car throughout.

1960 - 8,6,4,3,2 and 1 point awarded to the first six drivers.

1960 & 61 - 8,6,4,3,2 and 1 point awarded to the first six constructors (1960 Indianapolis excluded).

1961 to 89 - 9 points awarded to the winner, ie 9,6,4,3,2 and 1 point to the first six finishers. It was not until 1962, that winning constructors claimed 9 points.

etc.....

The reason is simple: The official name was "Coupe Internationale des Constructeurs de F1", International Cup for F1 Manufacturers! Indy wasn't run to F1 rules...

Yes but a REAL Coupe Internationale des Constructeurs de Formule 1 should have included Caen, Syracuse, Bruxelles, etc... ;) So maybe a more appropriated name would have been :
" International Cup for Formula 1 Manufacturers Taking Into Account Only The World Drivers Championship Races (With The Exclusion of Indianapolis) "

Mike Lang's Grand Prix! Volume 1 1950-1965 lists points tables for each of these years, but the 1958, '59 and '60 tables don't include Constructor points for Indianapolis (just dashes in the column).

I haven't yet seen any specific reason as to why points were not awarded (I'm still looking) other than perhaps that the Indianapolis 500 was considered something of an oddity in the F1 Championship all along (?).

It is strange that in 1961, drivers scored 9 points for a win, while constructors still only scored 8 points.

Another oddity, I guess.
