Whats the most common image that people have when thinking of an F1 driver in terms of physical appearance, accent, personality and etc...?

Rick Mears once said F-1 drivers are 'itty bitty guys in itty bitty cars, going really really fast' .

He lived way before my time as a fan, but everytime I see a picture or read a story about Francois Cevert, it reminds me of the stereotype I used to have of what F1 drivers should look like, sound like, and be like.

Modern F1 driver: Thin guy in a clown suit, helmet as wide as his shoulders, corporate speak.
Old F1 driver: Graham Hill

If this is meant to describe a certain 4 time WDC: the AtlasF1 driver bio shows us that Michael is 1.74m, or 5'-8 1/2" tall. Where I come from five-eight isn't even considered very tall for a girl.

Schumi's accent (and his bro) isn't very German afterall. He does not sound like Arnold Schwarzernegger for example.

JPMCrew, i'm really glad you remember Cevert
and there was James Hunt...
not too many personalities around now: Irvine, Villeneuve, Salo... german accent has not too long a tradition in f1 - of course, there were von Tripps, and Stuck, and Belloff...

I believe Arnold is Austrian. So he should like Gerhard Berger.

Short, highly paid celebrities who live a fairytale life style made possible by living in various tax havens around the world and who wouldn't be able to tell you the price of a gallon of milk without first consulting his accountant.

Alex Zanardi is the image in my mind (pre-accident) his build, hard faced, oil stained, long haired, dodgy latin accent and slightly mad.

Funny you say Graham Hill - I have a signed picture of him at the Indianapolis 500, whcih was aprt of a Firestone tire campaign when he won in 196???? I'll have to dig it out. I also have another memory of the guy, so weridly, I picture him.

Your modern driver is spot on. "Yes, we secured an excellent result during the day, and although we finished 14th, the BAR Honda, Shell fueled, Royal Bank bank rolled, Arthur Andersen audited car ran smoothly for us."

By the way, whetever happened to Arthur Andersen as a sponsor? We know they can't add, but maybe they saw something about F1 we should know???

Hill won the Indy 500 in 1966. It was an exciting race. Clark thought he had won for the second time, but it turned out he was a lap down. Clark had led the 1966 race though, but he spun twice. Once he did a 360, without losing the lead. People were awed by that, how it was possible to do a 360 at Indy without hitting the walls. Clark replied: "Spinning takes practice."

And JPMCrew, Francois Cevert, that was a nice bloke and a quick driver. I'm happy that I saw him race. In his last season he was awfully quick.
