"For a cheap but good place to stay, check out the dorm rooms for rent at McGill University:

These are right downtown within walking distance of the city centre and to many Metro (subway) stations which will wisk you right to the track! You can also walk to Crescent street wich is the heart of the Montreal GP nightlife GP Weekend (not to mention home to the Atlas F1 headquarters!! ) "
This is from one of Andy's posts & he should know he lives there.
Also, there are a gazillion (did I spell it right?) posts on same topic in the travel forum.

I have a friend who tried to book at McGill residences a month ago and RVC rez, at Sherbrooke and Unvierity, was full. This means all that's left is the stuff up the hill and - if you're familiar with dowmtown Montreal - you know it's not the funnest walk
Anyway - if you haven't already booked you may want to try UQAM (Universite de Quebec a Montreal). My friend ended up booking there and the rooms sounded to be nicer than McGill for about the same price (ballpark $50 per night).
