The same day as the Monaco GP.

May's last Sunday. (the 26th.)

Sadly the last Indy 500 I watched was live in 1995 when JV won it. I drove from Vancouver, Canada to Indy in 3 days just to watch it and started the drive home right after the race. That was how much I used to enjoy it! Haven't watched it since the IRL debacle

FNG,
Those days are coming back. Turn the page and get over your bitter feelings of the split. These last three years have been no worse than the races in the 70's, 80's or early 90's. What's returned is a buzz of rivalries. I'm looking forward to this year's 500 more than I have since well before the split.

Feel free to stay at home and enjoy your beer label of choice if you're still a bitter pissed CART fan but come on down for the party if you can get over it and have a good time!

Spec cars at indy....
coooollll...not...
The only reason indy's been any better is because it's shown that a driver that comes from a flat out formula car can still kick spec car driver's butts with a minimum of effort.
Indy is the third best race at it's own track, all bitterness aside.
Thank's TG....pass the pipe.... :drunk:

We'll see about that! My money's on an IRL driver to win it this year! If CART does manage to win again I'll suck it up and watch one of their crappy road races.

I find IRL bashing kinda ironic. Remove the names of the series, and you'd have a hard time determining if its an F1 fan talking about CART, or a CART fan talking about the IRL.

CART fans think the IRL has reject drivers, F1 people think the same about CART.

CART fans dog the IRL's "spec" nature but in all reality CART is really, from a technical standpoint, just an F3 championship taken to an extreme end. You have 1-3 chassis suppliers, and 2-4 engine manufacturers, with one or two chassis and usually one engine being dominant/favored.

So the real question is, who do IRL fans pick on :rotfl:

I'd say for the majority IRL fans don't pick on anyone. We just like to see good oval racing and kinda have a live and let live attitude about everyone else. Too bad the CART fans won't leave us alone.

Expanding on Ross' point of the definition of "spec cars",I'd have to go to the rulebook which by any definition makes every race series, including F-1,a spec series.
Using the rule book however opens up a series if it isn't 'too' restrictive,3.0L,no unoptanium metals and then it's up to you makes for a pretty neat 'spec' formula.Putting price caps on engines and chassis, using a rev limiter and mandated wing angles on a car puts it more into the "spec car" range if you ask this race fan however.
And yes,CART fits somewhere in between the two, with customer chassis and leased engines, but there is no doubt that CART teams have a zillion variations to chose from and have to learn how to use it.I do like CART for the simple reason that there are four distinctive uses for their 'spec' to be abused and every team has a different way of abusing their spec compared to the others, for instance the dominance of the "reynske/honda" which even thougjh in a pututive spec series found a way to be dominant.
Indy is the only race in which wing angles are not mandated in the irl,and team development, although limited will show once again that teams that just don't buy the irl package off the lot will dominate.i.e. Wtch for the indy specialists such as Nunn,Penske,Ganassi and Rahal to garner the dinero, while the off the shelf teams the irl runs year round virtually hand to mouth will suffer at the race that means by far the most to them.
And once again we'll be hearing the spec car teams the irl depends on race to race saying "we'll get 'em next year"
As long as the CART teams show up for the indy every year, and that's it,the irl will suffer, and this is the reason behind the same game/new game that TG is playing with the potential new CART spec parties.
Lola is taking the brunt of it for now,but as long as TG keeps moving the pieces every time CART becomes a force within his own league at their one special race,CART is dicked.
Lot's of players want to use CART's more open use of the irl spec, but if TG shuts them down with new formulas and new suppliers rules CART teams will be playing catch up forever or expending vastly more dollars for one off rides to participate at the i500.
American OW fans are well aware that TG is out to kill CART and has no compunction in using indy as a weapon, even if this American institution in racing is destroyed in the process.
TG is was and always will be a petty tyrant in American racing, that will be his legacy and compared to his grandpa Tony Hulman,a midget.
TH would never have let the Frances in the door or the Ecclestones for that matter,TG did and as a result has put the i500 in a spot that it will never recovr it's past glories from.
I'm not bitter and I never have been, just sad and now, disgusted, particularly with his rumblings about banning Lola.

Just have to agree with river and ross.

What used to be the greatest oval race in the world, a race made up of the fastest, most innovative designs, is now stifled by ridiculously restrictive specs that make the IRL the defacto definition of an open-wheeled spec series.

As Tony continues his efforts to crush CART, he's only dumbing-down the I500 even more.

As it is, this is the last year to see real CART cars race before they're forever gone and replaced by IRL clones. What a shame.

What do you consider Roger P, IRL or CART?

Just watch any oval race in NASCAR, IRL, or CART they are all pretty much the same: boring. Indy is no exception.

Yep.

Technically, it's on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, which is the last weekend in May.

Cart is finished and the blame lies with Cart. Oval racing with open wheel cars is far too dangerous.

Say what you want about Roger being CART's premier team or whatever but in any case he's running full time in the IRL this year and not a single race in CART. I consider him an IRL team. Likewise for Ganassi's ride for Jeff Ward. Brack & Junquera I'd consider CART drivers obviously.

Hey Indycarjunkie, stop generalizing Cart fans, that really pisses me off. I am Cart fan,but yet I watch IRL races,so what does that make me in your book? (I don't like beer, but can I bring my Pina Colada?)

Back to the title of the thread,it will be interesting see this year's race. I have a feeling Michael Andretti may finally break the curse. I also wandering if the Infinitis will last 500 miles. Penske,Ganassi,TKG will be strong,Panther I not sure of. Can their powerplant last 500 miles?

I agree with you on this IndyCar,its going to be a great race this year.

All the arguing back and forth is pointless, the marketplace will decide who wins or looses the IRL/Cart split.

My apologies Tex. I realize there are actually some decent CART fans out there and they may possibly outnumber the a-holes. I've just had more than my fill of CART

oops!! Fu#ked that one up. Anyway, I've had more than my fill of CART fans coming over to IRL message boards and fan sites bashing the IRL and its fans. As a result I've come to the conclusion that CART fans as a whole are obnixious jerks with a few rare exceptions such as aportinga.

I'm happy that you've called me out and I'm glad to see I can count you as one of those rare objective CART fans. I hope the day will come that an IRL fan can safely attend a CART race at Mid-Ohio without getting jeers from the CARTisans.
