I've noticed since a few years that the start and finish line at several Grand Prix seem tos be not the same anymore. In qualifying and the race, the timing starts and finishes well ahead of the actual start/finsh line (the white line on the course, supposedly marking the start resp. finish of a lap).

For instance at the last GP in Imola, the startline (where the pole position holder is supposed to start) was a few hundred meters ahead of the finish line (where the checkered flag was shown resp. the lap times were recorded).

Is there any particular reason for this? Since when do the start and the finish line differ resp. isn't there a regulation that the start and the finish line on a circuit course (as opposed to a rallye course) has to be the same?

Any thoughts/comments

Bert

I believe the reason for that is that the line is at the same spot on track and also in pits, before the first team's place.

Sorry I didn't notice anything like that at Imola. Probably because I was sound asleep within a half a dozen laps. God that was the most pathetic excuse for a 'Grand Prix' I've ever had the displeasure of watching.
Sorry for getting so OT.

Byrkus has got the right answer as far as I know.

I never watch Hungary the mere thought of that joke of a circuit makes me ill.

In my Playstation game, F1 championship edition (based on the 97 season), both Imola and Magny-Cours are like that and I have often wondered why.

I fell asleep during this latest race as well.
