In his mid-30s, it's unlikely now that he'd ever be offered a GP ride but I was wondering if he ever tested an F1 car or what his previous international results were. Most of his success has been on ovals with the exception of his first win at Toronto and Mid-Ohio 1998 (after considerable attrition among the leaders). Without his wrist injury which forced him out of a number of races, I think he may have had an outside shot at the title last year.
CART has announced a race in Mexico on a new circuit and I suspect that AF's success has something to do with this. He's always had considerable support from Mexican companies, which may have made him a good option for a cash strapped F1 team.

Was Adrian Fernandez ever considered for F1?

John B I'm also a fan of Adrian Fernandez, and have been impressed by his racing. Hes also an extremely nice and down-to-earth guy, which is something sorely lacking in the F1 world. It seems hes always been an outside chancer at the title, kinda like Frentzen was last year in F1. Unfortunately I dont have any more info on him than that, but I bet that about 5-10 years ago he could have been an F1 contender given the chance.

The are two factors to be researched:
1/ F1 circus coming back to Mexico with a GP?
2/ number of smokers (buying premium tobacco brands) in the country?
Tha second point may also be important in relation to new branded products/services that use F1 as marketing vehicle and find Mexico as an interesting market

Fernandez is a nice example of how 'equal' CAR is... 96 he won a race, 97 he was a mobile chicane (highest was 8th), the next year he won a race again... Now I'm wondering is that the car or the driver

Adrian Fernandez, although in the crappy Lola in 1997, wasn't exactly a mobile chicane.
At the season finale at Fontana in 1997, he was 3rd, behind Mark Blundell and Jimmy Vasser.
