I recorded the 1988 GP of Monza but didn't really start recording season till 1990. I missed 1992 & 93 because the damn college dorms did not have cable. Thus I am thinking about ordering a few races on VHS of the 1989, 1992 & 93 seasons. Just wanted to know which races were the very best to collect?

Donnington 93 will be a popular choice. (not that I saw it as I was a bit young)

In my opinion you should definitely buy Monaco '92 (great duel Senna-Mansell), Europe (Donington Park) '93 (it's where Senna showed his prowess in the rain).

Of course, I'm biased - I'm sure there are other great races as well, but I think anyone will agree these two are among the best.

Cheers

Donington 1993 is quite interesting. It shows some pieces of very creative (hum hum) driving by Senna ;)

1989
Brazil - Nigel Mansell wins first time out in the Ferrari
Hungary - Nigel Mansell pull soof an unbleievable pass on Senna to win
Suzuka - Prost & Senna clash

1992
Boring year. Monaco wasn't bad, but only because Mansell got a flat and Senna won

1993
Brazil - Senna in the rain
Donington - Senna in the rain
Estoril - Mika debuts with McLaren and outqualifies Senna
Adelaide - Senna's last win

Now that you mention it :) Wasn't it in Brazil where Berger in the Ferrari broke down pretty soon after the start and actually no one at Ferrari expected the car to last, let alone win?

The pass in Hungary was quite, well, ballsy. Mansell was later quoted "it was one of those moves, where you are regarded as a hero when it works, and a total idiot when it doesn't". How true....

Which year in Imola was it, btw, where Mansell overtook (well, tried to) someone on the straight after Tamburello, was pushed on the grass, did a 360 degree spin and continued totally cool and undamaged?

Hungaroring 1989 is an absolute must.

donnington 93 is cool. mainly because
a>it was the only race there
b>it was fun to see prost pit 5 times and
c>its a laugh to hear the compliments layed upon rubens.

monaco 92 was a yawn, even more so than most monaco races. barring a mansell ****up, and him spending the last 10 laps trying to regain the lead he should of easily had, nothing special.

89 hungarian gp is a good one, as mentioned it has one of the classic passes, someone out sennaed senna. kinda like nige on senna at barcelona in 91(?) and mika on schuey at spa.

ive also got a soft spot for 89 brazil. nige winning in the first race for ferrari, totaly unexpected. and it also included the first 5 wheel change pitstop, ive seen.

apparently mansell/ferrari were worried enough about the whole semi-automatic gearbox thing that mansell had warned the guy behind him on the grid (warwick i belive) to be prepared to dodge his car at the start. nige wasnt even sure hed get off the line....

Didn't Andretti do well in Monza 93? Were their any other races that year where he performed well...other then the tripple linding he did at Brazil :rotfl:

Just takin' some notes, here.

There were just so many ...awfully hard to choose, but, there definitely some real gems as these guys have mentioned.

The one braodcast that really delivered good sound emphasizing the difference in engine sounds was Monza '89, Lap 1, under the old banking into Ascari...it was just magical - V10, V10, V12, V12, V8, V8... Talk about music:love:...whew! Wish 12s were legal...

It was 1990. Amazing. He came around Tamburello and tried to pass Berger. berger pushed him onto the grass, he spun the Ferrari changed down a few gears and kept on going. The commentators went crazy. He retired after though. Stones got in the radiator.

He came 3rd. It was a pretty good performance. There was some attrition though but still a good drive. He stopped after that.

If you want exciting, interesting races from thoe years, then get the Australian GP for each of them

89 - Rain fest, crash fest, excite fest! Worth it just for the fact Nakajima gets fastest lap :eek:
92 - Mansell & Senna collide, Berger & Schumacher battle it out
93 - Sennas last win, and because it was the first GP I went to. If you look at the stand at the end of the back straight, I'm the guy in the Footwork shirt :) I don't know if many people realised this, but on the slow down lap Damon Hill did some doughuts right in front of us. We were well chuffed

Definitely Hungary 1989
Monaco 1992
Belgium 1992
Imola 1989 (several potential winners before Patrese wins at home)
Donington 1993
Portugal 1993 (several leaders from different teams)
Brazil 1993 (McLaren's 100th, Senna at home, Prost crashes from lead)
**Portugal 1989 all kinds of action including Senna/Mansell crash, Berger wins, MINARDI LEADS
Suzuka 1989 it all comes to a head at McLaren
France 1993 (Hill stays with Prost)

Hungary 89, surely.

Suzuka 89, the F1 epic.

Hungary 92 was a fine race.

Brazil 93, Senna against all odds.

Silverstone 93, Senna gives a lecture on defensive driving holding up a car who qualified 3s quicker than him for several laps.

Belgium 93, Schumacher on fine form.

Suzuka 93, Irvine hampers Senna's style.

Hungaroring 1989 is the single most "important" race with Donington 1993 a close second. Senna's great races from 1993 have been mentioned (Monaco was great). I've not seen the race since I saw it live, but I seem to remember Hockenheim 1993 being a good race.

1989 was a rather boring season except for Brazil, Hungary, Estoril and Suzuka.

1992 was very boring... Barcelona, Monaco, Spa and Montreal (in that order) were the best races for me.

Surely Brazil 89, sensational debut for the semi-automatic Ferrari after Nigel hardly made a decent practice lap, remarkable debut by Johnny Herbert as well (finishing 4th, 10.4 seconds behind while still recovering from his Brands Hatch crash)
- Canada 89: sudden rainfall, cars sliding everywhere, brilliant drive from the back by Boutsen, at one time Nicola Larini was 3rd in an Osella!
- Portugal 89: Minardi rules! And incidents galore
- Australia: some crazy pirouettes in the rain, Senna playing Jaws

- Spain 1992: good rain race
- Belgium 1992: MS emerges

- Brazil/Donington/Monaco 1993: a Senna trilogy (and a Prost farce)
- Portugal 1993: hi Mika! what have you been doing all year?

The 1989 Canadian GP was a thriller...

You had rain, sun, rain again, more sun and to top it off...more rain. :p
Mansel & Nannini were excluded for jumping the start...from pit-lane !
By lap 10 - half the field was gone !
Johansson thrilled the crowd with his tire man's air gun hanging from the car :drunk:
Fastest lap of the race was by...Jonathan Palmer in the Tyrrell
Brilliant drives from: Warwick, Larini, De Cesaris, Moreno, Senna

...And a great first win for Thierry Boutsen's Renault powered Williams :smoking:

Hmmm...

My personal favourites.

Mexico 1990. Ferraris of Prost and Mansell start in the midfield and finish 1-2
Hungary 1990. With 6 laps to go 5 drivers still had a shot at the win.
Germany 1988 just to see Senna`s genius
San Marino 1991 because the first 6 laps are plain hilarious
Hungary 1989.....overtaking at the Hungaroring - yeah right  Mansell starts 12th & wins
France & Spain in 1992......powerboat racing at it`s best

This is turning into the best race of 88 to 93 so may I add Barcelona '91. I've unfortunately only seen highlight clips from it but it looked fantastic.

89 - Brazil; Canada (Senna's Honda failed after 1: 58h :( ); Germany (Prost cracked under pressure); Hungary (for Lion); Spain (Senna raced only for win in a circuit fitted for Ferrari best chassis); Suzuka (greatest, but stolen, Senna's victory)

92 - Monaco; Italy (finnaly Ferrari's fans let Senna in peace)

93 - South Africa, Brazil, Europe, British, Australia

Of course ...

Prost cracked the gear under pressure is better?

Jos Ramirez has another version for this "gear problem" if i remember well.

Everytime it rained in 93 it was like phew Ayrton can race the Williams and Benettons now and he won them !!!He drove better than Schumacher that year....anyone remember how well Alessandro Nannini did in '90 he raced Senna very well indeed that year was it Germany and Spa that he drove really well.
It was great to see Senna though when it was down to pure driving he was quickest like the rain races(Brazil, Donnington, Suzuka) and around the streets of Monaco(Schumi did well too) and Adelaide. I think i'll get some magazines out from those years and scan some pics in actually.

:smoking: All my favorite races and some more have been menstioned, agreed with alot of them, these are great races, that I enjoy watching again and again, the drivers, the regulations, the closeness in racing, the diversity of the characters, just the peak of as good as it gets, and there's still alot of races I need to discover, having fia video reviews of some seasons, I'm in no rush, its nice to treasure some races and save them, also hope someone will release the seasons on dvd, as vhs is crime for me to buy, as I am dedicated to dvds, so alot of races to enjoy again, and watch the characters and moments live again by pressing play on the remote control, go Senna, Mansell, Schuey, Prost and the rest.

These years are just going to get more popular and popular as each generation discovers it, just see these years as the peak of everything I have enjoyed in f1, ashame life has flown by since. Great drivers, great racing that gave us, the best:up:

Have a look at this it is a pcture of the start at Portugal '93 Hakkinen has taken Andretti's seat at McLaren and out-qualified Senna only to be taken right after the first corner and Alesi who started 5th in a dreadful Ferrari blasts around the outside out of absolutely nowhere ! :p on the left is Prost the champ that year and Schumi is behind them the actual race winner !
In the back ground Berger-Ferrari Blundell and Brundle up behind him Patrese over on the right in the other Benetton plus Derek Warwick (Toshiba-Footwork) Lehto and Wendlinger Saubers middle and right with Warwick behind Warwick middle shot you can see Rubens Barrichello too in the Jordan and Johnny Herbert-Lotus :smoking:

Interestingly too I notice all the front runners here have got onboard cameras I wonder where all that footage has gone....Posted Image

Picture is not loading at the time I am writing this.

As for the footage of onboard camera, some of it must be on the fia video review of 1993, got to take a look. Either way I think there's loads more onboard footage and pole positions of great Senna laps when he would be a second faster just like that, when it was not expected of him, stuff like that has gotta come out on dvd sometime, I'm sure its all being saved for some ultimate package, and other great races, there's loads more interesting stuff they could release in the future, just hope they do it in our lifetime. :smoking:

Don't forget to catch the finish of Monza 93, when Christian Fittipaldi did a beautiful back-flip after hitting teammate Martini's Minardi and still finished 8th!!!

I was wondering about that the other day. Is it just our generation that finds this era that attractive? Is it because we grew up in the early 90s? Our childhood memories? Will anything be so sweet and new as it used to be? Those epic battles. Boy oh boy if we could turn back the hands of times just for a few races! Romantic stuff
