Not forgotten. A lovely multi-talented guy.
We called him di Angerous for his super-committed style

Elio was a hero,he was the hero of my hero!Alesi adored de angelis more than any other driver.that is why he took his helmet design.he felt that maybe he could keep the memory of hi alive somehow. To me he took more than just a helmet design from elio,he races in the same way, with the same passion flair and style.i would never call alesi the new elio, there is never a new elio.but somehow he helped continue the memory.
R.I.P ELIO DE ANGELIS
P.S. good luck in that big gp in the sky,you got your work cut out with senna and jimmy though!
p.p.s. Completely o/t and pointless, but did you know that de angelis and patrick depailler are the only drivers whose surnames begin with "D" to have won world championship gp's(i think!)

Yeah, even Mark Donohue didn't make it...
R.I.P. Elio, I will always remember him for one particular moment: finish of Austrian race 20 years was even closer than last Sunday but much more enjoyable. I will always remember it while I can only hope I will forget this year's one...

Poor Elio. How rarely we seem to remember him.
But how inappropriate that the Austrian GP, the scene of Elio's famous 0.050 second wheel-to-wheel win over Rosberg in 1982, a fine example of real, proper racing, should also have been the venue for this week-end's shenanigans.
Thanks, Elio for that wonderful memory - it helped to take the bitter taste of modern F1 away for a while.

There is a story in the recent RACE CAR ENGINEERING on the Brabham BT55, and Gordon Murray recalls the accident.
Elio had only suffered a broken collar-bone in the crash, but was suffocated from a fumes of the fire that broke out.
There were no fire extinguishers at the site of the accident and when the fire-truck finally arrived, the hose blew off the truck...
There is a good reason for having a high safety level even for testing...

I remember that his father was quiet angry at the time apparently for very
good reason.
He was an extremely talented and well educated young man who came from a
well known Roman family. If I recall correctly, he was a talented piano
player as was Francois Cevert.
I only saw him up close one time and that was when he was running the F3
at Monaco the year that Depailler won in the Tyrrell. They had so many F3
cars and such limited pit space that some of the F3 cars were on small side
paths near the harbor up on a cliff above the circuit, I never did figure out HOW they got the cars to the circuit. It was above the St. Devote area.
He seemed very normal but with a certain grace about him.
Bobby Rahal ran a Dallara/Wolf and Howdy Holmes who I had race FF with was
in one of Fred Opert's Chevron's.
All in all it was a very special weekend being my one and only Monaco F1
race.
It is bad enough when someone dies in an race car accident, but for them
to die stupidly like he did is very, very hard to swallow.
R.I.P Elio.

I feel privileged to be able to say that I saw Elio's final race. I was at Monaco on May 11th when Elio struggled around for 47 unpromising laps in the BT.55 that ultimately killed him.

It didn't even last that long Barry - the BT55 expired on lap 31 with no boost pressure. :

I looked up the race result on Darren's site. Seeing 47 laps, I guessed that to be the laps completed - it must have been the laps behind the winner...
