Does anyone have a picture of David Coulthard using Michael Schumacher's helmet in that fantastic Monaco GP of 1996?

I have a picture of David waving to the crowd after the race, with the Michael helmet on. But its in a magazine somewhere in the basement of our apartment building in Finland I think. I go to Finland at the end of next month, I think someone else may find a pic before that=).

Sweet picture - thanks Bira!

Actually I do hope this isn't a whole ruse to bring up a joke about fitting a square head into a round hole.

I hope I don't get flamed by this, but I love the way that car looks and would love to see the cars go back to being wide like that. Today's cars look too much like a needle.

The front wing was really simple at that time.

It was simple then, but front wings from 92/93 were very very complicated things, with 4 long long venturi's on each side running between the wheel struts, doing the job of a barge board on current cars.

I could live without the silly wing on the engine cover, notice it has the same Marlboro add as it's bigger brother at the back :)

I'd like to see the cars returned to a wider track too. It's something you don't notice much, then you see a picture from the early 90's and the first thing you notice is how wide it is. Of course, a wider car means more wing and more downforce which everyone seems to think is bad.

It also means more drag, so there may not be that huge a change in speed.

iirc, it was something to the effect that David's helmet or helmets were soaked with water and Michael either agreed to loan him one or he offered a helmet to DC.

DC found that the visor of his helmet fogged up in the appalling weather conditions and asked MS if he had a spare to lend him for the race,

As I remember, David payd cash for that helmet (he and his manager managed to scrape smth up at the last moment).

Thank you, Bira!

In that GP, only after the warmup it rained, and then they had 15 minutes 1 hour before the race to run in the wet. As the weekend only had dry conditios until that moment, only in the last minute Coulthard found the problem that masterhit described. I think that this kind of thing never happened before or after that race. At least I never heard about anything like that in other race.

Your not the only one that prefers the older wider cars.I hate the way the modern groove tired, narrow track cars look.Bring back the old cars with slicks!.

That's one of the more ugly McLarens IMO. However the 1993 McLaren, was a really beautiful car

by the way, speaking of helmets......I dunno if anyone noticed.........I saw the picture in Il Corriere della Sera last Monday. It showed Schumi and DC immediately after the end of the race, with Schumi a few inches from DC, congratulating the Scot while holding one hand on his shoulder. It was perfect because their were shot exactly from the side, so you could see their profiles. Now, Schumi's head is notoriously quite big......but if you have seen the picture, you can notice how much bigger DC's helmet actually is!!!!! I realized instantly that his nickname was well deserved!!!! :rotfl:

I suppose it wasn't as much an act of sportsmanship by schumi as 'encouragement' from sponsor marlboro to let DC use Schumi's helmet that day. If Irvine's or Hakkinen's helmets fit better than Schumi's, then methinks it could just as easily have been one of their helmets on DC that day.

Sadly I can't find it, but in the post-race press conference Coulthard was asked about why he's wearing Schumacher's helmet. He replied that he had a problem with his own helmet, and since he and Michael used the same type of helmet and since the two were neighbours (Schumacher lived in Monaco back then), he simply popped to Michael's apartment and took one on a loan.

Don't make it sound like a PR thing. Astonishingly enough, DC and MS were actually friends back then  had a lot to do with the fact that they both disliked Hill :)

OK, found this part which was on the terrestrial TV coverage:

Q: We saw you driving with a Michael Schumacher replica helmet can you explain that?

DC:
Yeah, I thought that might cause some confusion, but I had a terrible problem in the warm up with my helmet. The visor was completely steamed up and I couldn't see after one lap and I didn't feel confident I could fix the problem, so I asked if I could borrow one of Michael's helmets and he had no problem to lend me one and we just covered his personal sponsors over and off I went.

Additionally, in the questions off the floor later he was asked again why he asked Michael and he explained that they both use the same helmet, and because he lives in the same complex as Michael it was easy popping over to his apartment and grabbing one.

As far as I'm aware DC and MS are still friends today. The Spa 98 spat was over pretty quick.

Ricardo, they are on amicable terms now. They are most certainly not friends.

There is a difference.

Does that have anything to do with DC's friendship with Villeneuve?

Toss in Mika Salo into that mix.....DC,JV and Salo bring their own motorhomes to the European GP's and stay the whole weekend in them (i.e. sleep at the race track), I know these three try to make sure they park them side by side by side....last year it wasn't too bad as it was just JV and DC...but now with Salo, they are finding it tough (apperhently) to get good parking for themselves...in Spain they had to park on the other side of the paddock fence, so the organizers assigned them their own guards....

Schumacher tested 94's Ligier to get used with the Renault engine, used by Benetton in 1995.

Well I don't think Schumacher allows any 'friends' in the literal sense within the F1 circles (probably why Jos isn't driving any more!) - sorta links to the whole Johnny Herbert / Schumacher fallout thread from a while back. But from what DC told me in Tokyo they actually get on pretty well, primarily being the two senior members of the drivers safety thang.

I remember DC wearing Schumis helmet in Monaco 1996. I have always thought that DC has always used Arai helmets and Schumi Bells (before switching to Schubert) so in that case David would have used competitors helmet. And if he had a contract with Arai i would have thought that he should have paid some compentation for that. Mika was using Shoei helmet so i guess DC couldnt use his helmet...

If I recall correctly, Colthard asked Schumacher if he could borrow his helmet because he wanted to try out the new helmet design. Schumacher and Coulthard got on much better in 1996 so Michael had no objections to borrowing his helmet to Coulthard.
