I only know,

2001 BAR run 6 gears while Jordan in the same engine running 7 gears.

Ferrari, McLaren and Williams are all on 7 gears.

2002 BAR run 7 gears instead of 6 now.

Sauber run Ferrari engines and gearbox which is 7 gears.

Toyota designed their engine to work with 7 gears, but then they had problem with the gearbox and went back to 6 before the season. They were expecting to have a new gearbox with 7 speeds before the end of the year to work better with the engine.

Ferrari have been running a 7-speed gearbox since 1997 i think. its worked so well they've stuck with it since, they did have a 6 speed in 1996, but tried a 7 speed in the later stages of the season but it proved unreliable but fast and perfected it in winter and stuck with it ever since. hope that helps :D

IIRC Ferrari did some work on an 8-speed tranny in '99 but decided the added weight and complexity were not worth the added acceleration.

Only 7 forward ratios are permitted, pretty dodgy rule there if you ask me.

I sort of had the impression that the 7 forward ratios rule was an oblique way of making CVTs illegal, and not a decision targeted specifically at having more or less conventional ratios.

Doesn't make it any less dodgy, though ;)
