Are there any web sites that have information on the exact engines f1 teams used in the past? I know in 1994 three or four teams plus Benetton used Ford engines. What I what to know is what specific Ford engines each team used. Not just 1994 and Ford, but for all teams from the 1980's and above.

Thanks!

I'm sure you'll get a lot of help with this from the Technical Forum.

We sent him over here because we thought you'd know! The depth of technical knowledge here far exceeds the historical knowledge over at the Tech Forum I'd hazard.

I think i can rememeber the History of Ford's "topengine" from 94.

94 : Benetton
95 : Sauber
96 : Forti
?? : Lola

I remember a qoute from Lola´s boss that they should do all right because theres Ford engine was a real Racing engine ( meaning that it was reving a lot higher than the other Ford V8 ) but that did not help them a lot.

I am sure also that Simtek´s 95 car was one of the last with mechanical valvegear, so in 95 there was at least 3 different Ford V8 ( The "normal" with and without airsprings and Saubers Ford V8 )

I also think that the last Ford V8 in Minardi ( from the year before they was driving with Hart engines ) was engines they bought without any kind of back up, and then they was hiring Magnetti Marreli to maintain them during the season

From the top of my head, there were 5 versions of the ED. I'll check tonight, if still necessary.

There were also at least 8 development stages of the HB. In 1993 Benetton and McLaren were in constant dispute with Cosworth as they thought the 'other team' got better equipment. I believe Cosworth went for HB '6' to HB '8' in that year alone. Since the engine was still used in 1994, it's likely there might even be a HB '9'.
Since those developments were often introduced during the season, it's hard to find out which team used which version at which event. Even sorting out the "Zetec-R" (never an official Cosworth designation, used by Ford for commercial purposes) mess is harder than it seems.

This is what I scraped together over the last few years. Sources are very diverse, maily contemporary magazines and racetech.
Let's start at 1987:
AGS, Coloni, LC-Lola, March, Tyrrell all used the Cosworth DFZ, the enlarged version of the DFV. AGS, Loal and March used Mader engines, Tyrrell had a Cosworth-tuned engine.
1988:
Cosworth DFZ Mader: AGS, Dallara, Eurobrun, LC-Lola, March, Minardi, Rial
Cosworth DFZ, lowsump version by Hart: Tyrrell
Cosworth DFZ, tuner unknown: Coloni
Works-Cosworth DFR: Benetton
1989:
Cosworth DFR Mader: AGS, Coloni, Dallara, Minardi, Osella, Rial
Cosworth DFR Hart: Arrows, Onyx,
Cosworth DFR Langford & Peck: Ligier, Tyrrell
Ford HB: Benetton
1990:
Cosworth DFR Mader: AGS, Dallara, Minardi
Cosworth DFR Hart: Arrows, Onyx, Tyrrell
Cosworth DFR Langford & Peck: Ligier
Cosworth DFR Osella: Osella
Cosworth DFR, tuner unknown: Coloni
Ford HB series IV (!) : Benetton; (a series III engine was used in the 1991 Jaguar XJ14)
1991:
Cosworth DFR Mader: AGS
Cosworth DFR Hart: Osella/Fondmetal, Lola
Cosworth DFR, tuner unknown: Arrows, Coloni
Ford HB series IV: Jordan
Ford HB series V and VI: Benetton
1992:
Ford HB series V: Fondmetal, Lotus
Ford HB series VI: Benetton
1993:
Ford HB series VI: Lotus, Minardi
Ford HB series VII: McLaren (with TAG electronics)
Ford HB series VII and VIII: Benetton
1994:
Ford HB series VI: Simtek
Ford HB series VII and VIII: Arrows. Larrousse, Minardi
Ford Zetec-R (3.5 V8) : Benetton
1995:
Ford ED1: DAMS/Reynard, Forti, Lola, Pacific, Simtek (what a great engine that must have been...)
Ford ED1 "M": Minardi (with Marelli electronics)
Ford Zetec-R (3.0 V8) : Sauber
1996:
Ford Zetec-R (3.0 V8) : Forti
Ford ED2 and ED3: Minardi
Ford Zetec-R (3.0 V10) : Sauber
1997:
Ford Zetec-R (3.0 V8) : Lola
Ford Zetec-R (3.0 V10) : Stewart
Ford ED4 and ED5: Tyrrell
1998:
Ford Zetec-R 97 V10: Minardi and Tyrrell
Ford Zetec-R 98 V10: Stewart

Nice info, Frank. One note: as I said Zetec-R was not an official designation. Cosworth EC, ECA, JD and VJ-engines were badged Zetec-R for Ford's commercial interests.

The Fondmetal/European-badged Cosworth VJ-engines of Minardi in 2000, '01 were tuned by Langford Performance Engineering. I assume this is the same company as Langford & Peck from 1989, '90?

By the way, the DFZ for Coloni was tuned by an Italian company called Novamotor, better known from Formula 3 engine preparations.

I noticed the different names of the engines from one and the same manufacturer (Cosworth), for example in 1989: "Cosworth" for AGS, Coloni, Dallara, etc., but "Ford" for Benetton. Same goes for next season when Jordan will use "Ford" engines and Minardi (and Jaguar) will use "Cosworth". How was that in the past -- say the 60s and 70s? Were all the engines calles "Ford" or "Cosworth" or maybe even "Ford Cosworth"?

Something else: what is the difference between the Cosworth Mader, Cosworth Hart, Cosworth Langford & Peck, etc.? Did I understand correctly that Mader, Hart, etc. is the tuner of the engine?

Rebuilders and developers... the latter, I would think, to a lesser extent.

But not only Cosworth had engine tuner. Heini Mader often tuned BMW engines, perhaps only in F2, but perhaps also in F1.
