lads, I'm off to Hockenheim on Wednesday to work on the German GP. Can anyone tell me where the Jim Clark Memorial stone is out on the circuit? I know I'll have a couple of hours free on Thursday morning and would like to find it & take a look. Cheers!

This was written in 1975:

" .... take the short walk from the stands out into the country. Just beyond the chicane, where the woods stretch to the side of the track, you will find the gate [in the fence at the point where Jimmy was killed] . Step through it and you are among the saplings. There, low on the ground, is the rough stone cross with a collection of wild flowers around it. You will find no manicured lawn, no chains to keep visitors back, just a small cross in virgin soil - the silent memorial to that sad day in April 1968."

from Jim Clark Remembered by Graham Gauld.

Pictures please Gary. :)

Hi Gary

Some years back Jim Clark’s widow told Bernie Ecclestone that she was sad to se that spectators was sitting on the Memorial stone and drinking bier, and Bernie promised to take care of it so that this disrespectful behaviour didn’t happen again. So it will probable a lot easier to find today, than back in 1975. Please take a Photo.

Best Regards

OK, it all depends on my work commitments, but if I can get there, I promise to bring back some pictures. Thanks indeed for the info, everyone.

I got back from Hockenheim yesterday evening. Hopefully, Mr.Boor will be adding some of my photos of the Clark Memorial to this post in a little while. I was depressed to find that ALL of the old circuit has been torn up already (Germanic efficiency??) and that they will be planting trees to make up for whatever has been uprooted in the building of the new circuit. Consequently, the tributes to both Jim Clark and Bert Hawthrone will now be out in the woods somewhere. I'm hoping that they will make a feature of them so that they are not just 'lost'. The place at the moment is a building site, with the track, armco and fencing all being torn up, leaving just a sea of mud. In fact some of the fencing has been strewn on the ground adjacent to the Memorials themselves, which upset me even more. They could have cleared up a bit, expecially for the GP weekend. Interestingly, I caught a ride with Herbie Blash on the way back from the airport and mentioned the Memorials and he said that he goes out there every year when he attends the Grand Prix to pay his respects to his friend Bert Hawthorne, who, when he had his accident, was sharing a flat with Herbie. Mr.Blash having just started working at Brabham in 1972.

Here are GaryC's two images from Hockenheim this weekend; the first shows the Jim Clark memorial in the same place as it has always been, apparently; while the second shows the location of the stone, sandwiched between the trees at the top left of this picture, plus the confirmation of the removal of the old circuit.

The memorial stone has not been moved, thankfully. Gary's photo confirms the positioning of the memorial as shown in Graham Gauld's book on JC. It would appear that the intentions are to leave it alone, although I've just got off the phone to Gary, and he reckons there are rumours of a hotel complex being planned for the site. Please someone tell me this is not so... :(

I visited the Memorials to Jim Clark & Bert Hawthorne at Hockenheim in September 2004. The staff at the ring were incredibly friendly and helpful - even giving us a ride out to where the memorials were. They are very respectful of the memorials and I am sure they will keep them well maintained.
They will not be lost in the woods as they are alongside a pathway which is accessible outside of the raceway too - if you try to get to them from within the ring, you need a staff member to unlock the gate to let you out.

This is very pleasing news. I also have been concerned that this memorial would be somehow marginalized with the removal of the real circuit. I am very encouraged from Grant's post that people may access the memorial from outside of the circuit.

I am among those that desire to see this marker left undisturbed.
