One of the Speed Channel announcers said the bags on the vacuums were a new sponsorship opportunity.;)

After watching the Canadian GP I said to a few people "I wonder why a team hasn't developed vacuum cleaners to suck up debris during a pit stop instead of putting their hands in"... and viola, Ferrari where first to do it. They did have a huge debris problem at Canada so it doesn't suprise me they looked into a solution.

When I saw those things I thought "good idea", but then the same doubts came up I wrote in the discussion pRy mentioned - vacuums are nice and good and certainly faster than removing debris etc. by hand - but what if there are LARGE objects in there, as in styrofoam burger packaging, large pieces of paper, debris picked up from crashes etc? That is, objects too large to fit into the nozzle. If you remove the debris by hand, you can remove those objects. But if you simply hold the nozzle in and press the big red "SUCK NOW" button, you either won't be able to remove those things and they stay in, causing engine overheating - or they get stuck on the nozzle and prevent the vacuum cleaner from picking up the rest of the debris.

I would think they would know if big debris were in there.

You think so? I think it's pretty easy for some of the garbage thrown around by the crowds to get sucked in when the car is driving on a straight past the grandstands. The team would not be aware of that stuff until somebody actually looked in or felt around with his hands.

IAm sure that Ferrari just didn't go to the appliance shop and bought the 1st vaccum cleaner.
Surely they would have put it to lots of test.

(Unoffical sources say that RB was doing most of the testing with the vaccum cleaner !! :p)

Presumably Michael's cleaner is set on suck, thus getting rid of all the junk in the sidepods. Rubens' must be set on blow, to have the opposite effect.

Is there any reason they couldn't simply put a fine mesh grille over the intake to prevent debris from getting in the sidepods in the first place?

This would restrict airflow to the heat exchangers and result in overheating.

when I saw the first pitstop I wondered what that guy was going to do. Suddenly that bag exploded to its full size!!! ****, that startled me!!! I DID NOT LIKE THAT AT ALL!!!

But then I realized what they were doing, seemed funny afterwards.

I just wonder why they don't make those bags half their size. They're kinda in the way there.
So  Ferrari....just make them a bit smaller to prevent clumsy things from happening

I wonder if that's what those turtle outfits were that the McLaren mechanics were wearing a while back?

Actually, unknown to all ruebens vaccum cleaner suffered a mechanical failure (launch control & dust flap problems) and failed to operate leaving him with dirty sidepods

The have cameras following the cars thoughout most of the track. And also they would notice a increase of temperature. There is a chance they could miss it, of course, but indeed Ferrari is taking the chance with the vacuum. We shall see in the coming races whether this is a good idea.

Thus my remark. :)

What better opportunity for Michael to boost his sucker sales than advertising them in F1....on a very similar gadget!! :)
