Famous racing driver Vic Elford has joined us in the Nostolgia Forum. Vic finished 4th in his first ever F1 race, in the rain, after starting next to last. He won the Monte Carlo Rally, 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring, and many more races. Even finished 11th in the Nascar Daytona 500! He raced the legendary Porsche 917s as well as the Chapparral and Shadow Can Am cars. This guy is/was the real thing. His website is at

This guy was very much involved in the rise of Juan Montoya, and is one of the classic great story tellers of racing. He was a Skip Barber instructor when I was passing through and he was there for the maddening chaos of my first ever start. This guy is beyond cool.

Vic is also a big Porsche & Ferrari enthusiast. He instructs for both marques and is a super nice guy. I had a chance to meet him a few years ago and he told me some great stories.

A memory which has been tatooed forever in my brain is the image of Vic blazing down the Mid-Ohio straight in the A.V.S. Shadow "Batmobile" Can Am Chevy with the funky 10" front wheels circa 1970/71. Man, was THAT something!! I would LOVE to see a photo of that monster again!!!!!
Obviously, Vic was able to "tame" the 917 in grand style along with Mssrs. Siffert, Rodriguez, Atwood, and Redmond. I also believe he handled some of the major driving sequences in McQueen's film "Le Mans". What a guy!!

To Brian Redman and Dickie Attwood - Sorry gents for flocking-up the spellings of your surnames in my previous post.
Caught a small b&w photo of the A.V.S. Shadow in Vic's site gallery. I know he, George Follmer, and Jackie Oliver DESPISED that rig to the max, but what a sight it was - quite similar to dumping a big-block Chevy in a shifter kart!! Also seeing a photo of my beloved Long Tail 917 absolutely made my night!!!!!

Vic drove before my time, but great to have such an acomplished performer here.

The Chaparral looks mean, anyone have any idea what sort of downforce it produced, or the downforce/drag ratio?
