I posted this on Tifosi-Club, but want to share w/ you.
For those who read Italian here is the link

Basically, the mayor of Monza says that a project is underway to hopefully a build an oval around the Monza track. Grandstands Indy-style et all. Funds will have to be found for this very, very long term project, for Monza is the only circuit on the F1 calendar that is totally financially self-sufficient. Anyways, I am not a big fan of oval racing but it sounds exciting no matter what. What do you peoples think? CART or IRL in the peninsula?

The old banking was very bumpy from day one and the present day cars could not last a lap on it. Also, the old banking is falling apart and is unsafe. I believe that there has been some discussion of tearing the old banking down because of it's condition.

Sure, but Italy right now has the largest oval in the world.
Its called Nardo' [a banked-circular really] and the thing is a monster.
I belive its 4 Kms in diametre. 12 kms circum.
I saw it from a plane once and my mouth dropped at its immensity.

Its used for super-secret auto testing.

This is the track where the Lamborghini Murcielago set the official FIA Hour Record of 200mph?

Uh.. with 100% and more of banking? i dont think the drivers will like blacking out in every corner

Considering the trouble CART had last year (?) at one oval with too much banking... and that was only like 15% iirc.

And I am not sure about the comment about Monza being the only circuit on the F1 calendar that is totally financially self-sufficient. I know that many tracks get national or local government support but who is bankrolling tracks like Hockenheim, Nurburgring, Silverstone, Indianapolis or Spa. Surely some of these are self-sufficient?

The problem is that Monza the circuit is located in a park that is a natural reserve (yes, only in Italy we can come up with something like that.....this is Lumbardy, easily the most poluted area in Italy....). So, cutting trees is not allowed. Every time Monza has been slightly modified and say 15 trees had to go, poltical battles started among organizers, promoters, the FIA, the Green Party, the local government, the sport press, the local press, the national press....you can get the picture. Cut the trees, don't cut the trees, protests, manifestations. Just absurd.
So, don't you ever consider that a possibility. An oval in Italy? quite possible. Anywhere but in Monza, though.......

Damaged beyond repair? Well, duh, tear it down and rebuild it. it would be such a great idea
if its still repairable, FIX IT!!!

I agree (if it is possible) to re-build the old oval with less degree then the original. That way Monza would become an "all purpose track".

Here's a rough translation of it:
Monza, the town council thinks the banking must go.
The Monza Park Councillor thinks that "The autodrome banking degrades the park and is an insult to human intelligence. It must be demolished," explained Councillor Gianpiero Mosca, "to revive the green strip, enlarging it. Today, inside the autodrome, this strip is corroded by large areas of tar and concrete."
According to Mayor Michele Faglia, "SIAS is working on a project to revive the entire area of the autodrome. We have asked, as administrators, that one of the objectives is to understand whether the banking can be reutilized, if it could be compatible with the restoring of the historical perspective of the park, as it was intended by Architect Canonica who designed the Monza park, perhaps by dismantling only parts of it."
This is a never ending saga. Personally I'll be very sad the day the banking is demolished, if it will indeed.
