In 1969 Audi presented the Audi 100 Coupé S in Frankfurt. The car based on the 1968 presented Limousine, had a 1.9 l-4-cyl. engine ( 115 hp) and was in production between 1970 and 1976 (only some 30000 coupes have been produced – the limousine was more successful –also for Audi and the future of Audi with more than 800 000 produced cars).

Initiated by the technical director Dr. Ludwig Kraus (former R&D dept. of the Mercedes Benz racing dept./ he joined Auto Union in Ingolstadt in 1963 when Auto Union was a daughter of MB)) the car looks like a Fiat Dino Coupé (but the Audi was designed in Ingolstadt - may with the help of the young Hartmut Warkuss, the actual Chief Designer of Volkswagen or with a little help of Claus Luthe, the designer of the famous NSU Ro 80 - Audi and NSU merged in march 1969).
I have all the documents of the homologation of that Coupé for motorsport and I have heard, that there was a car in a race by some engaged Audi engineers in the early seventies (Must be between 1970 and 1973, because afterwards Audi and VW had no money for such jokes in motorsport).

I have some pictures of a blown-up Coupé with big tyres, a 160 hp engine. Does anybody know more? Maybe the Coupé raced in a 2-L-class against BMW 1800/2000 (2002), Alfa GTA, Opel and so on? Don't confound that car with the Audi 100 Coupé S prototypes (3) Porsche used to develop the 928 with the V8 engines in 1975/76. Any information from insiders?

Somewhere in my small archive, I have an article on two specially prepared Coupé 5S, the edgy 1980-model with the five cylinder engine. They took part in the DRM, if I recall correctly. Standard 1,9-liter engine tuned to 200 bhp or more, using a Pierburg fuel system and some other fancy stuff. But I don't know much about the 100 Coupé S.

The only Audi 100 S coupé I came across is the Audi France car at Spa 1973 of Dupré/Boucher. A 41st starting position meant that it wasn't really competitive. It finished a creditable 12th however.
Apart from that one, I don't know of any others, neither in germany nor in the netherlands. Since the Escort RS 1600 of 1971, cars without 4-valve heads were not competitive at top level touring car racing.

If the car was homologated in group 1 (5000 cars/year) it could have raced in there (and perhaps the Spa car was a group 1?); but then it would have had serious competition from Alfa's GTV and later the Escort RS 2000.

Perhaps if you post the pictures we may find out more.

Frank, very interesting, I think I heard about France, may you have more information? Was it a Audi France car, or an Audi-Audi, as we said in Ingolstadt for clean Audisport cars, without teamsupport. May you have a competitors list? I will put the ONS-documents on TNF (with Bruns help?).

All I know is on my site . It was the French importer's entry, which makes sense since they entered a fleet of 80 GT's in later years.

Thank you, and an interesting site Frank! As I said, I will scann the documents, if anybody or you is interested in it. Yes and the Audi 80 GT (GTE) was than much more interesting and cpmpetetive. Any informations about that car?

The Audi 80 is a very well-known touring car. A short rundown:
 • Group 1,5 Francorchamps 1974-1975: Abt and Audi France fielded cars for some long-distance races.
 • Group 2 1976-1981: the Audi 80 was regularly raced in the ETC as well as national championships. Works cars appeared between 1977 and 1980 (replaced in 1981 by the coupé 5S).
 • 1976-1981 group 1B: semi works car in 1976 for the Diners club trophy; races in national championships (germany, UK etc.) . Stirling Moss didn't like the car.
 • Group A 1982-1988: Some semi-works cars raced in the ETC
 • Supertourisme: spectacular 80 Quattro cars were raced in the national French series.
 • Fia class 1: Audi made a prototype for the DTM series; it was never raced.
 • Fia class 2: Supertouring 80 Quattro cars raced first as works cars, but raced on until late in the 90's in private hands.
The Francorchamps and ETC cars and results can be explored on my site.

Once again very interesting. I have been in contact with some drivers from the seventies, racing the Audi and later on the VW Scirrocco, cause the Audi 80 (B2) may was too heavy for racing. But I also have some pictures about that time....But everybody told, although the Audi and the VW had a similar construction (enginje and so) the VW was easier and better to handle. And in 1979 Audi had built up the first roots of Audi sport to get educated in motorsport, cause in 1981 they wanted to make professional sport with the quattros. Some names: Freddy Kudelinski, Frank Nowak. Have to have a look in my archive.

Concerning Nowak, I seem to remember he was called Hans-Jürgen Nowak, most of the sources however call him Hans-Joachim Nowak. Is that correct?

You are right, and he was engineer at Audi NSU, later Audi. I had a look at his card. Frank Nowak is another name I remembered, have to have a look who he is. Was Spa the only race Audi France took part? Or did they use another car later on?

Okay I had a look on your website, and so in 1974 they used the Audi 80. It had the better engine, was lighter and I think better in the results.

Thanks to Brun, we can have look in my archive.

Here is the only picture I know from that car, which raced in Spa. Interesting Design, the wheels and some components from the former Audi 60/Super 90. I have heard that the car was built up by Abt in Kempten (Bavaria), but I don't know more. There is one car existing in Germany, which looks the same and is an original tuned Audi 100 Coupé S from Abt. Maybe Frank knows more about the Audi 80s raced by Audi France later on. Was Abt in involved? I think the picture was taken in the former R&D buildings, which were some old buildings in the middle of the city. But I'm not sure. Abt started tuning the Coupé in 1973 with the first spoiler, later on they went on tuning VW. You can have a look at their website: http://www.abt-sportsline.de under history.

And here is the picture

I do know that Abt built a 80 GT Group 1 "Francorchamps" car in 1974, which was raced at least in the 1974 Spa 24h, coupes de Spa and Brno 1975. The Audi France cars looked more or less the same, but I don't know if there was any connection. Maybe a mail to Abt might help.

Frank I already made that mail today. May you have pictures of that car, so I can compare them with my pictures, I took from Audi press, when I was working there. The pictures have no comments, just for me a chronical order by design or team. But I don't know where they started, nothing. Would be interesting to hear from Abt.

This smilie is for my daughter, looking for those ferrytales we are looking for, she is standing beside the laptop... okay. Now she is on TNF.

Frank, I have to find those homologation documents. I think Audi had nearly built 5000 coupés a year, may in the best year of production, here the production from thze annual reports: they are differrent from year to year 71 (8234), 72 (8094/8406),73 (7989). but did they also built 5000 Audi 80 GT a year? It was only produced in 1973/74, afterwards followed by the Audi 80 GTE, also not so much produced. (It was the time of the oil crisis and it was not the Golf GTI)

As far as I know, the "Group 1 Francorchamps" rules were based on group 1 to start with, so Audi must have built 5,000 cars within a year to homologate the car in group 1. In my view, that wouldn't be an impossible figure.
BMW had to race the heavy 3.0 CS instead of the CSL leightweight exactly because of this rule. However, a Citroen SM raced at Spa as well, and I doubt that 5000 of those cars were built in any year - but who knows if there was a backdoor?

I had a look in the annual reports from 1972 to 1976. The Audi 100 Coupé S had the chance to be homologate. The difference, I wrote about comes from the difference between sold and produced cars. And I have to correct me, they presented the Audi 80 GT in 1973, followed from the Audi 80 GTE in 1975. But in the annual reports we are talking about production years, not about calendar years. There are no special production numbers about the Audi 80 GT/GTE, but Audi NSU was very proud about that special touring car (more pictures and comments than for example Ro m80 or Audi 100 Coupé S). Since 1973 they had a special Audi Trophy for the private drivers. (Interesting, cause Auto Union closed this private driver support in the sixties, and Audi NSU started it again in the 70s ). If a backdoor would be possible? You are the expert, but I'll will contact the ONS for the documents of the Audi 80 GT/GTE and the later on types. And the Audi 100 Coupé S I've to find here in the house. I keep on trying. You'll see the copies, if interested.

I got a list from DMSB (former ONS) about the Audi homologations in the 60s/70s/80/90s:

Audi homologated the Audi 100 Coupé S in 1971 by the ONS (Oberste Nationale Sportbehörde): The homologation number was 5423 and the car was homologated in Div. 1 (this was for 5 years) with the 1871 ccm engine. The Audi 80 GT was homologated in 1974: The homologation number was 5559 and the car was also homologated in Div. 1 but with the 1588 ccm engine (There was no new homologation for the 80 GTE). Later on they homologated the Audi 100 5E (C 2). And than all the homologations for Audi motorsport in the 80s and 90s (Ur-quattro, Audi 80 quattro, Coupé Audi 200 quattro, usw.) Interesting is, that Audi also believed in the Audi Super 90, they homologated that car in 1967 with the 1760 ccm engine in Div. 1. This car took part at the Rallye Singapor-Bangkok.

Talking about Motorsport and the succes of Audi in the 70s.

I found Harald Ertl an Audi 80 in the european- touringcar championship
It's the Audi-Teamcard with autogramm. I think, 1977 "Grosser Preis der Tourenwagen" on the Nürburgring.

His Co-driver was Hans Joachim Nowak. The Audi engineer, racing for years for Audi and part of the quattro motorsport team.

Holger,

I have a complete collection of "Sport-Auto" - the french issues- dating back from 1967. My other source for these years is my collection of "Fórmula" - spanish monthly publication - and books on the Tour de France, Tour de Corse, Monte-Carlo or others. Now I'm working on my own International Rallying Database, an enormous task growing up slowly but steadily.

Carles.

PS: I'll come back later with data concerning to the Tour de Frances.

..and in the Danish Saloon Car Championship that same year. The class was Saloon Cars Group 5, over 1300 ccm. Here’s a short, translated paragraph from a contemporary motor sport almanac:

The beginning of the season gave promises of new exciting moments in this previously predominated Volvo-Cortina class. Now it should be possible to see grids consisting of Ford Mustang, Porsche 911 and others, as well a some Danish drivers was looking around for other manufactures of cars. Already at the beginning of the season it was clear that Danish drivers would enter Alfa Romeo GTA, BMW 1600 and Audi in an attempt to break the Cortina Lotus-Volvo stranglehold.

No driver is mentioned, and it isn’t mentioned in any of the short race recaps that follow this paragraph, so I guess it wasn’t exactly a winner, but it was there. Take a look at this:

http://

The dark car with the rectangular head lights on the right, roughly third row from the tail end of the grid. This shot is from Roskilde Ring on September 17th 1967.

Well, not much to judge from, but then last Friday (October 11th 2002) a documentary featuring Roskilde Ring was broadcasted on a minor Danish TV-station. The programme mainly focused on the single seaters, but among the various short film clips, some of them in colours, there was a variety of saloon cars as well. For a few seconds the camera lens focused on a nice three-wheelie thru a hairpin by a hard driven, dark green-blueish Audi Super 90! In fact it was more a shot of the wheelie than the car itself. I guess front wheel drive characteristica like this was a bit novel in 1967. Did the Mini-Cooper’s lift very much during cornering?

Just as a tid-bid of information I can tell you that the white Mustang involved in the crash was driven by the first Dane to start in an official F1 Grand Prix, Tom Belsø.

Thank you for the nice words.

I guess you would like further information about Audi, but also NSU and DKW in motor sport? For that purpose I will write up a few more shorts about my knowledge regarding danish motorsport.

And as for the picture, that will take a little longer.
