Magazines or newspapers usually serve as source for detailed racing results but on a few occasions, book authors have made an extra effort to include results in their works. The publications shown here are those known to me. I left out the annuals from John Eason Gibson (1946 to 1949) or The Motor Year Books from Laurence Pomeroy & Rodney Walkerley, covering the late forties. Oh..... the ones in bold font, I consider important books. :)

  • 1906 – Charles Jarrott – Ten Years of Motors and Motor Racing – 1895-1906, major races, winners shown only.

  • 1953 – George Monkhouse & Roland King-Farlow – GRAND PRIX RACING Facts & Figures – 1894-1952, Majority of races, place 1-3 shown only.
  • 1961 – Rodney L. Walkerley – Motor Racing Facts & Figures - 1894-1960, Majority of races, place 1-3 shown only.

  • 1982 – Edmond Cohin – Historique de la Course Automobile 1881-1977 – 1894-1977, French book of all major races, detailed results are not always complete.
  • 1987 – Paul Sheldon with Yves de la Gorce and Duncan Rabagliati – A Record of Grand Prix and Voiturette Racing, Vol. 1 – 1900-1925, All major races, detailed results. Followed by Vol. 2, 3, 4, and others in same style.

I wonder, are there other books worth mentioning? Such I forgot? Covering the 1895-1949 years.

Peter Higham's Guinness Guide to International Motor Racing has the bare bones of a lot of results, but very little in the way of insight or analysis. It has the benefit of being one cheap volume that's handy to keep on your desk.

Beat me to it Pete! Just to complete the info it has winners only of selected races (mostly culled from Monkhouse/King-Farlow, I think), plus first six results for major pre-1950 GPs, Indianapolis and Le Mans.

Karl Ludvigsen's Classic Grand Prix Cars - The Front-Engined Formula 1 Era 1906-1960 has various Grand Prix results including reprints from a number of publications of the time.

The results are a long way from being comprehensive, but I had to mention it as it's one of only two historical motorsport books I own at the moment (more on the way). :)

...book authors have made an extra effort to include results in their works...

Like these, you mean? Or are these too specific of a period? Well, anyway...

1965 – TASO Mathieson – GRAND PRIX RACING 1906-1914, the ACF GPs shown only

1972 – Henry Serrano Villard – The Great Road Races 1894-1914, Winners and cars in Appendixes (author reckons that his sources for data are Rose, Jarrott, Pomeroy and Lord Montagu)

1984 – David Venables – The Racing Fifteen Hundreds - Voiturette Racing 1931-1940

1986 – Chris Nixon– Racing the Silver Arrows 1934-1939
